Very strange night last night. I had a dream where I was praying for people, specifically an old girlfriend of mine from 35 years ago. She was distraught over something and I was praying that God would give her assurance. So far as I know she's not saved, at least she wasn't back in the day. We have mutual friends; I've only seen her twice in the past 10 years or so.

Disclaimer: I have very vivid dreams. I definitely dream in color. I have recurring dreams. I have dreams where I'm reading the newspaper and after I wake up I can remember what the article was about. I have dreams where I'm writing something and I can remember what it was (usually it makes sense, but sometimes it doesn't.) I have lucid dreams--that is, dreams where I say to myself, "you're dreaming, let's see what happens." I have flying dreams, dreams where I push objects with my mind, dreams where days or weeks later the same thing happens to me in my waking hours, etc.

I personally do not put any stock in what happens in my dreams because, it seems, anything and everything can happen. But praying for someone? Never happened before.

Q: Has this ever happened to you? What do you make of it?

Only once, and I found out the next day that the person in my dream had lost his young son to SIDS the night before. In my dream, I was led to pray for his comfort and healing, though it was not clear for what.

I don't remember most of my dreams. I remembered that one. I found it exceptional that God led me to pray though asleep. Obviously the young father needed it at that exact moment.

Yes, this is one of my concerns.

Yes, it happens from time-to-time. Sometimes I find out that the person I was praying for in my sleep had an urgent need that evening. Other times I simply decide that God is calling me to pray specifically for that person and to add them to the list of people I pray for on a regular basis.

The ancients and people in other cultures believe that dreams sometimes have spiritual significance. I think there is a certain wisdom in that, especially when it is not just a weird, random dream where your brain is simply sorting out the events and concerns of your chaotic week.

If you are praying for someone, I tend to believe it is a Spirit-initiated thing. I suggest asking God to clarify these things for you and be open to the idea that God may speak to you in your dreams because your waking hours are so busy you can't hear His voice.

Thank you for sharing this very personal part of your life.
