An optimist says, "The glass is half full."

A pessimist says, "The glass is half empty."

A rationalist says, "The glass is too large."

An engineer says, "You are not utilizing the full potential of the glass."

If only the author of the O/P would actually engage in a discussion of rationalism, as opposed to empiricism, and demonstrate how his actions on this board show him to be a rationalist, instead of an empiricist. I believe him to be the latter.

    For instance...

"...if you are against raising taxes to fight poverty then you hate the poor."

There is no rationalism is that statement. It is the opposite of rationalism. In other words, it is an emotional response, with no basis in facts. There is no effort to find truth, therefore it cannot be called rationalism, and the folks who think that way are not rationalists.

It is a statement made out of excessive emotion.

That's right. And it is the opposite of rationalism. But you and I both know C.T.Boy will not debate his thread.

An empiricist would walk into a room with and see a glass containing 50% of it's potential, and accuse others of not giving their fair share.

An empiricist could also walk into a room with and see a glass containing 50% of it's potential, and accuse others of hating it's contents.

They would say that only after conducting experiments that proves their statement; empiricism emphasizes the role of experience and evidence.
