John of Japan stated on another thread that Thayer's was "out of date".

News to me, but then again I'm not exactly up on that sort of thing.

So my question is- what is the best one currently?

I'm guessing it is BDAG, but that's just a shot in the dark.

BDAG is generally seen as the best and most comprehensive for biblical Greek. It's the standard.

The Analytical Lexicon to the Greek NT is also considered to be reliable. If you're looking for a theological dictionary (a bit different from a lexicon) Spiq has a good one.

What would you recommend for a person with very very basic Greek skills?

Not sure how a lexicon becomes out of date. Over time, the words used become arcane, just like the KJV. Also, lexicon's written and not updated before the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls might need an update.
Finally modern scholarship might have gained a better understanding of the word range of meanings and the message conveyed by the grammar construction.

But, I am unaware of a list of incorrect word meanings, contained in Strong's, or Thayer's, both available on the internet. To claim the BDAG or some other acronym, is best, but providing no link, seems less than helpful. It seems you can buy a BDAG (Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament) for about $160.00.

Guess I am biased toward the lexicon I used many hours a day thru college and seminary Greek - George Abbott-Smith's 1920 classic produced by Harvard.

Mine is marked and pages loose (I bought it used hard in 1964). Now it is a free download for e-Sword

    http://www.biblesupport.com/e-sword...-a-manual-greek-lexicon-of-the-new-testament/

And I still use Liddell-Scott Classical Greek Lexicon to see NT words in historical context and watch them morph in meaning from Thucydides in 425 BCE to Paul in AD 65 (and trust me, I've translated both extensively!!)

Thayer wrote his lexicon just a few years before archeologists made some major papyri discoveries that added context and meaning to words that were not fully understood.

Thayer himself was not a believer in the doctrine of the Trinity so you might find some weaknesses in this area as well.

It's a good lexicon for the price (free) but there are better ones.
