I have to wonder if this persons actions were a sin. That I wonder. I mean he helped out others, and was fired and arrested. Would Jesus have done this? Would Paul? Would you? I remember once I worked in a retail store and I was ordered to destroy lots of merchandise that would have greatly benefited the poor. I did as I was told and kept my job, but was it right? My conscience felt bad, but I kept my job and kept myself out of jail by doing what I was told. But ethically I dont know. Companies usually do not give one rat about anyone but their profits and profit sharing checks. Greed for a great profit sharing check often gets in the way of doing what is right and ethical.

Yes, the discounts were not the employees to provide - theft is a sin. This is not even a "gray" area.

No question about it. You cant steal from a store to help your mother.

It was theft. Goodwill was very gracious in not pressing charges. Charity means I give of my own means, not giving what someone else owns.

That's not what he did. He didn't know the people he helped, or at least they were not friends, relatives or acquaintances with whom he did a "wink wink nudge nudge" kind of deal. He felt sorry for them and he helped them. No, it wasn't smart, but it also wasn't criminal.
