I have been planning on picking up a NKJV and wouldn't mind having David Jeremiah's notes.

It really isn't a bad price - but I'm cheap (by necessity ).

No. The NKJV is not one of the best translations. If you just want to have one on hand, pick up a secondhand copy or a 4.99 gift Bible at your local store. It's far too weak for regular use.

Also, David Jeremiah is a terrible exegete/interpreter. His eschatology (that seems to pop up in everything he talks about) is horrific. You're better with finding a commentary from a good scholar (I really like N.T. Wright's "For Everyone" series) and sticking with a good translation (NIV, TNIV, or for you woodenly literal people, NASB or NRSV).

MANY conservative/Evangelical Christians recomment the Nkjv though, and many see it an the Nasb as being among best to use for serious studies!

And Dr jeremiah Much better than a NT Wright for eschatology and overall exposition!

agree with you on Allen, but for most of us, the other bibles are good as it gets!

I prefer a bible and a couple of reliable commentaries. But I wouldn’t mind reading David Jeremiah’s notes. I like John MacArthur but find his study bible a little (at least) presumptuous at times. That said, I do like reading his interpretations (although, like Jeremiah, MacArthur is far from a reliable source for exegesis). In other words, I have never and would not recommend relying on a “study bible” as a good commentary. They are usually very one sided and narrow.

yes, for they are stauch KJVO, but my choice would be either the large margin note takers, or the calf skin 1917 Scofield bible version!

I am NOT by any means a regular kjv reader/user, but they make great bibles!

I know many like it, but few who know anything about textual criticism pay it much attention. It is far inferior to the NASB.

And I about choked on my own spit when I read that little remark about Jeremiah being a better expositor or interpreter than Wright. That's one of the more ignorant, surprising, false statements I've ever heard. Jeremiah is a dispensationalist, which is a nonsensical eschatological interpretation that wasn't around until very recently. It's completely baseless. N.T. Wright is the finest biblical scholar of our time.

I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with reading the notes as commentary, although they are usually not altogether helpful, I've found. Again, the "For Everyone" series is extremely helpful.

Ahhh, I see. They DO make great Bibles but if I'm getting a nice "looker", I'm going to get something I want to read as my regular Bible too. I am a faithful Bible owner. I pretty much have one Bible that I use and use it all the time. My current ESV is a pretty TruTone one in green with an ivy imprint in it. It's gone to camp with me, on the boat, to church, to the woods, in my car and on my walks. :) Fortunately, it's been holding up great for the last 4 years or so that I've had it. If I change, it's going to be to another Bible that will be my faithful companion. I do have other Bibles at home but not that I tend to take with me or use much more than for study but even then I don't use them much because of the online resources I now have. It's easier to search online than through a bunch of books!

Agree with you on not using the SB notes as main commentary, but also do think those are useful to get a "thumb scale" view of the text!

Would also say that bible like a Thompson or the Master Study Bible are useful, as they have more neutral study tools, and also good to get one like the Niv study bible, as notes are more of what others see in major passages!
