Rankings released by YouGov/Economist show that Ronald Reagan is viewed as the greatest president of the last 100 years, while Obama is viewed as the "biggest failure."

The poll asked respondents "to rate each president [since Theodore Roosevelt] in six categories: great, near great, average, below average, failure, and don't know."

Results showed that Reagan bested Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) and John F. Kennedy (JFK) in a tight race for the top spot. 32 percent of the respondents categorized Reagan as "great," while 31 percent labeled FDR "great" and 30 percent chose JFK.

When it came to ranking presidents viewed to be a "failure," Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon fared better than Obama.

    My top four:
    1) John Calvin Coolidge Jr.
    2) Ronald Reagan
    3) Dwight Eisenhower
    4) Harry S. Truman

JFK doesn't rank near Reagan at all in my book.

I agree with your comment regarding Kennedy. Much of that vote is nostalgia!

I think Reagan is the greatest president of the last century. In spite of opposition from the "pinkos" in this country he brought down the Soviet Union. The crowning blow to the Soviets was the SDI which the "pinkos" labeled Star Wars. And of course he overcome the malaise that Carter had created in the country and the impact of failure in Korea and surrender in Viet Nam1

I was not a fan of Truman at the time but I believe he was a great president because he had what it took to use the nuclear bomb to cause Japan to surrender. In my opinion Truman screwed up in Korea!

Eisenhower was a good president because he tried to stop the unfettered growth of the Federalestas. Coolidge was a little before my time!

If you don't know that much about JCC how can you determine that Reagan was the greatest President of the 20th century?

I know you like history. Most of American history happened before your birth --despite your advanced age! :) Yet you can claim knowledge of a great deal of American history.

The legacy of Coolidge had a mentoring effect on Reagan. Under Coolidge the debt was reduced by one third and the tax rate decreased by 50%.

Silent Cal has been short-changed in history. Time for a re-evaluation.

Rip, I agree Coolidge was a great thinker and writer, but he didn't get any of his programs enacted. If he had, the disaster that followed when the closet socialist, FDR, got into office, would have never happened, because the depression might have been avoided all together.

I would exclude Truman from the list. He was a little Roosevelt and solidified the Socialist stronghold in America.

Need a review of history, Aaron. Truman reversed much of the socialist agenda introduced by FDR.

The arch of history is long, seems a bit early to evaluate some of our modern presidents.

Agreed. Recently I read his inauguration speech and much of it sounded like stuff Reagan would say, or Rand Paul.

So what, he's a liar as he has proven. REagan actually did what he said he would do. Obama would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth.

    Calvin Coolidge was a liar?

I said nothing about Obama. I loathe Obama. Take a chill pill.

You're not far from the Truman Library. Visit it.

I've been getting jumped around here a lot of late. Yesterday I was called both a Socialist and a Nazi sympathizer. There's a lot of anger on this board.

I'm not angry. And I do not see you as either of those. Kind of a weird thing to say.

I read RM's #10 post and laughed my head off. He reads too hastily. Thinking you were speaking of Obama ?--My,my! He jumps the proverbial gun too often.

Very true Go2church. This is simply a popularity contest. Come back about 2200. The results of who was great and who was a failure will be fairly judged by then.

A better poll would be who were the best presidents between Washington and Lincoln.

I believe Truman will end up ranking very high. He made some very tough decisions on limited knowledge at the end of WW II. FDR had kept him in the dark on much. His decisions proved good ones.
