I'm considering switching churches, but before I get jumped on for being to critical please let me explain. I have been at my current church for around 15 years. I have never liked the way the church government was set up, their are women teaching men in Sunday school, we have over 2,000 on the roll with 150 average weekly attendance and some other issues I pray eventually get worked out. These are issues I have lived with and have brought up. Recently, we got a new pastor, his first sermon (before he was voted in) actually impressed me, it was theologically sound and very meaty. I haven't heard a good one since the church voted him in, they have become extremely light and shallow. The worst of it came a few months ago. Sunday evening he was talking about the SBC meeting and started ranting, this led to him stating that we should not study systematic theology, he then continued to relentlessly bash and insult Calvinist and Arms, not using scripture mind you, for about 25 minutes. This took the place of the sermon and we were dismissed. The same thing has happened several times since. Should I try to hang on and keep praying, or maybe switch churches?

Start hunting out alternatives and don't look back.

Try this....don't show up a couple of times....use the time to look foe other churches...see if he notices. Also what are others in the church saying. Do they agree with you...and are any of them leaving?

It sounds like a theological nightmare there. Just the fact that women are teaching the men would be enough for me. If not his rant would have been the clincher. Being there fifteen years I can see why you'd perhaps second guess, but I believe you are correct in wanting to leave. May God bless you and may He direct you to a good ministry.

I did speak him, without going into details, it didn't go so well. The problem is I live in a small town and there are not many choices, but I guess I'll begin the hunt.

you've been a member of that church (with them, means that I presume) and have NEVER liked their church government set up and it's only NOW you're thinking of leaving ?
    Why ?
That said and asked here's my not-worth-a-penny piece.
I'd sit down and think and pray about it for A YEAR if I were you, but I'm not you.
I would've just quietly walked out the door and leave the church to be judged by its Judge, if I'm not sure their ways and practices are scripturally unsound, lest I be wrong and bear the ire of the Judge.
Otherwise, speak kindly to the pastor and the deacons (if there are) as ONE GROUP and if they won't listen, then walk out quietly, and find yourself a church you'd be happy in for the rest of your life.

WOW!!! - Based upon recent SBC membership/attendance records the average for the SBC is about 38% attendance. I thought our church was bad at around 20% of the roll attending. Your church is about 8%. Yet there are good folks here on BB that seem to think the SBC doesn't need reform and that the train is humming down the tracks just fine. I bet your new pastor is one of those evil Calvinist, I bet he snuck in and those 1,850 folks just got fed up with it and left all of a sudden, I bet that's it!!!

Oh, well forget that, maybe he's not one of them there evil Calvinist.

Seriously, I know what you are going through and will pray for you and your family as you seek the Lord's will. Take your time, spend a lot of time in prayer, don't let bitterness get the best of you.

Have you spoken to God about it? Ask Him what you should do and be willing to stay if He tells you to and be willing to leave if He tells you to. I've found that by spending time in prayer and seeking His will, He lets me no clearly what He desires for me. :)
