As an Arminian J.K.Popham (1847-1937) railed against the doctrine of election:"If the God you speak of is the God of Heaven,I neither want to know Him nor to be where He is."

Upon a sober reflection of those remarks later in life he related:"I have many scars on my heart, but the largest and deepest is that which the above terrible speech made;it was the expression of the unbridled passion of my alienated nature." But he took solace in Matthew 12:31a :"All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto me."

As long as you believe Jesus performed His miracles through the power of Satan, your blasphemy will not be forgiven.

Most Christians do not understand how broad this commandment is.I did not either until I heard and read Pastors who could biblically expand the passage.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

The seriousness of this is captured by this anecdotal account.

    John Wesley :Free Grace

    Snippets follow.

From Section Two : "the doctrine of predestination is not a doctrine of God."

From Section Five :"this doctrine not only tends to destroy Christian holiness, happiness, and good works, but hath also a direct and manifest tendency to overthrow the whole Christian Revelation."

From Section Seven :"it is a doctrine full of blasphemy...I will mention a few of the horrible blasphemies contained in this horrible doctrine...this doctrine represents our blessed Lord...as an hypocrite, a deceiver of the people, a man void of common sincerity."

From Section, Seven Point Two:"It represents the most holy God as worse than the devil,as both more false, more cruel, and more unjust."

From Section Seven,Point Three:"This is the blasphemy clearly contained in the horrible decree of predestination!"

From Section Seven,Point Four:"This is the blasphemy for which (however I love the persons who assert it) I abhor the doctrine of predestination."

The default tendency is to use matching vitriol when responding to such accusations. If we do then the debate is lost on both ends. A former pastor of mine used to say, "Keep the main thing the main thing". It is good advice. For us the main thing is the convincing evidence of scripture explained using plain reason. There is one very good reason to keep the "main thing the main thing". We lessen the possibility of harming our brother through coarse dialog. Too often we get in the way instead of biblical truth.

I thought true arminians don't reject election...that's a function of a non Calvinist...or one that leans toward semi pelagianism. Perhaps I'm confused.

John Wesley authored The Arminian Magazine from 1778 until his death in 1791. I believe it's still in circulation. He was a world-class Arminian/semi-Pelagian.
We (or at least I) use the term non-Calvinist to be polite. Most Christian non-Calvinists fit into the Arminian schemata. Staunch Arminian Roger Olson insists that most American church-goers are Semi-Pelagian.

The God of Scripture must conform to their logic or system of fairness or He is blasphemed. That God is wholly other is repudiated. All of this is contrary to true Biblical faith.

Does it have a single thing to do with irreverence? Is it profane or not to misuse the Lord's holy Name?

    I did.

    Pro 30:7-9
    7 Two things have I required of thee;
deny me them not before I die:
8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee,
and say, Who is the Lord?
or lest I be poor, and steal,
and take the name of my God in vain.

You are correct, they do not reject election, just the calvinist meaning of it!

they hold generally to God either electing the plan of the Gospel/Church, and whosoever decides to trust in jesus makes themselves the elect of god by their decision for christ!

calvinist see it as God election causes the sinner to receive jesus and salvation, while they see it as being our free will choice to accept jesus then as God marking us as electe din christ!
