I used to have these debates with 7th Day Adventists, but know it appears some evangelicals are promoting a vegetarian lifestyle in a book called The Daniel Plan.

Does this author have a point or has he produced a self-help book? I am on Weight Watchers and they strongly discourage this type of lifestyle being linked to various problems and they are very science based. The theme of the book of Daniel is not self-help, but the Sovereignty of God. The author got some nutrition experts to comment on this book, but I am curious as to if they were paid well to say what the author wanted them to say. I do not know, as 7th Day Adventists argue this same type of exegesis.

I know that when I purpose to lose weight by following a restrictive diet, I find my spiritual life grows.

There's something about denial that brings us closer to God.
Perhaps that is why prayer and fasting are so closely connected in the scriptures.

The author is Rick Warren so that should answer the question. God says we can eat meat and Rick Warren says we should not. The issue is not about meat verses vegies. It is about self contol in how much we eat so enjoy your steak or hamburger along with your salad.

Accordng to 1 Tim 4:1-5 teaching one to abstain from meats is a doctrine of devils produced by a seducing spirit.

It probably centers around exercising my will.

IMO, many sins are an indulgement in self-pleasure.

When I deny myself, I become less "self" centered.

I exercise self-disicipline and deny myself of a pleasure.

It becomes easier to deny those other pleasures, those pesky sins we too often pleasure ourselves with.

I'm no vegetarian (I tried it for a year a few decades ago and like barbeque sause too much).

I'm also not so thin that I can claim permanent spiritual enlightnement - it's just something I noticed.

Dr. Bob lost considerable weight a while back - I'd wonder if he noticed a similar connection.

Have you read the book? Source that the DP is vegetarianism, or are you merely trying to slander people again?

It would really do you and Judith well not to bear false witness, and seek repentance... http://www.danielplan.com/thedanielplanplate/

The Daniel Plan focuses on the core food groups of healthy carbs, healthy fats, healthy protein, healing spices, drinks, and super foods. And The Daniel Plan gives an easy guideline to use for any meal:

    50 percent non-starchy veggies
25 percent healthy animal or vegetable proteins
25 percent healthy starch or whole grains
    Side of low-glycemic fruit
Drink—water or herbal ice teas with

“Then God said, I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”
    Genesis 1:29

That's exactly right. You are practicing a discipline - you are controlling one aspect of the body. We tend to become slaves of our body, feeding it according to its immediate desires instead of mastering the body and have it serve us and God. By exercising discipline over what we eat and when we eat it, we gain spiritual "muscles" through the grace of God and are better able to resist the other desires of our bodies that would have more horrific consequences.

Many people stumble into the spiritual disciplines through diets or 12-step programs (historically based on spiritual disciplines) and find their whole lives transformed by the grace of God.

    To the OP:

Maybe not more spiritual, but "more healthy".

Americans are overfed and undernourished, swilling down 42% fat calories, more than double what is needed or healthy. That is why heart disease and cancer, especially breast and prostate cancer are epidemic. These conditions are caused by saturated animal fats.

First of all, I have to laugh at people who say they're losing weight on the "Daniel Diet". Rick Warren was on TV just the other day promoting the "Daniel Diet".

I have to assume that none of these people have ever read the text. Daniel gained weight as a result of his obedience to the Lord.

In answer to your question, my wife is a vegetarian and she'd be the first one to tell you that it doesn't make you any more or less "spiritual".

Then I stand corrected. But what good can come from anything Warren writes?

Control your sugar intake, cut out all bleached flour, and be well.

That question is equally asinine. I know many people have come to Christ through his ministry. He's not my cup of tea, but that isn't a requirement in being called by God in ministry.

The text never said he gained weight. In addition, the fact he remained healthy looking was a supernatural doing, not dietary.

Before the Flood, man did not eat meat, according to the Bible, so do you think God changed His nature or just His mind?
