Devotion

    What do you use for personal devotionals?

    Briefly mine is an extended time reading the Scriptures, not by topic but working through a book, often repeating the chapters I read the day before to allow more gleaning of truth. As I read, it is with the attitude of prayer and seeing the Wisdom of God in each passage. Often the Holy Spirit brings to my very heart the ugly of sin, God's judgment, and the faithful righteousness of my Savior.

    Along the way, I am more often lead by the Holy Spirit in the text of a great Hymn or Spiritual song.

    Here is one that come to mind:
    What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
    leaning on the everlasting arms;
    what a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
    leaning on the everlasting arms.

    Refrain:

    Leaning, leaning,
    safe and secure from all alarms;
    leaning, leaning,
    leaning on the everlasting arms.

    O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,

    (written by Elisha Hoffman who wrote over 2000 hymns in his lifetime).

    One of my favorite that Elisha Hoffman wrote is "What a Wonderful Savior." It follows the form of presenting truth as a call with the response "What a wonderful Savior" as an Amen to that truth.

    Bible reading and devotions

    I am reading through the Bible. Originally, I was going to read through in a year (I have before on several occasions); but I have been - uh - distracted, and didn't make it all the way through last year. So I am just continuing. I will finish the read - this time in chronological order - and then start over, whenever I finish this cycle.

    At the same time, I spend some time in prayer. I have several 'lists', some from my local church and some based on my family. Not to mention the daily matter of dealing with my own preferred vices and failings. Not just for needed forgiveness, but for a deep change of intention and attitude as well.

    I find I pray a lot when driving. If I'm going more than about five minutes from location to location, I find it easy to pray as I drive - and normally the Lord will remind me of subject matter. I got in the habit when I lived in Los Angeles County and commuted daily; I found praying kept me from thinking about finding a club and counselling people on how to drive...

    I like to sing, but I find I don't sing on my own very much. When I do, it is usually older hymns - "The Unclouded Day" comes to mind. I always have like Willy Nelson's version. The "Blind Boys of Alabama" version of "Amazing Grace" is also meaningful to me.
