Interesting article in today's local paper. After the brouhaha over Sherman's antics after the NFC title game a columnist reminded us all of the time when Peyton Manning excoriated a team mate.
    ------------

In 2003, Manning did an interview while playing in the Pro Bowl. Then-Colts teammate Mike Vanderjagt had questioned Manning and Colts coach Tony Dungy, saying he didn’t see the Colts ‘‘getting any better’’ under the duo’s leadership.

Here’s what Manning said about that on ABC during the Pro Bowl:

‘‘Here we are, I’m out at my third Pro Bowl, and we’re talking about our idiot kicker, who got liquored up and ran his mouth off. What is the sports world coming to when we’re talking about idiot kickers. He has ruined kickers for life. [David] Akers and [Adam] Vinatieri, these guys are great guys, and they’ve been getting killed all week because our idiot ran his mouth.

‘‘When I get home, I’ll deal with it. Tony and I will talk about it. It’s kind of funny, really, when you think about it. If he’s still a teammate, we’ll deal with it. That remains to be seen. The sad thing is, he’s a good kicker. He’s a good kicker. But he’s an idiot.’’

Sherman and Manning both insulted an NFL player on national television. Sherman’s rant occurred moments after the end of an emotional game.

Whether his attack on Crabtree was a carryover from the emotions of the game or a calculated attempt to raise his profile, his rant can be summarized as an insult to an opponent, an attempt at self-glorification, and an homage to his team.

Manning’s rant occurred days after Vanderjagt went on a Canadian cable show and questioned Manning’s leadership. He could have ripped into Vanderjagt through another outlet at another time, but he waited until he was in uniform, during a game, to launch a long, insulting diatribe against a player who would remain his teammate for another two seasons, while mentioning his Pro Bowl appearances and intimating that he had a say in his team’s personnel decisions.

Two great players used a national TV interview to criticize another player. Sherman targeted an opponent after an emotional game. Manning targeted a teammate while coasting through a Pro Bowl.

    Which was worse?

    From your cited article:

Too bad the conversation isn't about football.

The difference between Manning's rant and Sherman's? Manning was right. First, Vanderjagt's rant came after he cost the Colts a win in the 2003 playoffs when they were clearly the best team in the AFC, by missing wide left, a feat he repeated in the 2005 playoffs, and handled it thusly:
Then, just four days after that ...
And finally, last spring, after he had long since parted ways with the Colts and no other NFL teams would touch him ...
Sherman's rant impugned one of the best receivers in the NFL, Michael Crabtree, and came because (apparently) Sherman was mad Crabtree had been "talking to him" all day long. C'mon Sherman, for the love of Lombardi, you idiot, that's what wide receivers do, and you can't tell me you didn't give it right back to him, and then lied about Crabtree pushing you after you "offered to shake hands." The videotape shows clearly all you did was dance around him and taunt him -- which, by the way, got you a well-deserved 15-yard penalty.

Sherman, get over yourself! You're a meathead.

Actually, Sherman went up to Crabtree and said, "Helluva game, wasn't it?" and offered to shake hands. That's when Crabtree shoved him and Sherman puts his hands out as if to say, "what's that about?"

    You can see/hear it here:

Go to about the 50 second mark.

The NFL fined him $7,875 for taunting and unsportsmanlike conduct for that little act. He's an idiot.

No, they fined him for making the choking gesture.

Have you heard of this marvelous invention called Google? It's a search engine. It's really useful for finding things so you can get your facts straight before you start posting.

Once again, I have to do your reserach for you by going to google.com and typing in "sherman crabtree". Here's the 2nd link in the list, an article from cbssports.com about what happened between Sherman and Crabtree at an offseason event.

Actually, Sherman and Crabtree were mic'd up during that game and there wasn't much talking going on between them. You can listen to it here.

Nope, wrong again. Somehow, you managed to not see Sherman try to shake his hand.

FWIW, I wouldn't call Crabtree "one of the best" receivers in the NFL, I'd say he comes in around #15 - #20 or so.

Well, too bad you didn't look farther than the second article, because here's what really happened.
Just in case you missed the point of that statement, your story came from Sherman's brother. My story came from an unassociated third party. Catch that?
Yeah, sure, that's the whole of their interchanges throughout a three and a half hour game. You're kidding, right?
I saw it. Don't buy it. For one thing, the game wasn't over yet!! Good grief!!

FTR, Sherman's not an idiot. He had a 4.0 GPA @ Stanford. He had a bad moment, but I'm a diehard Raiders' fan, and would have zero problem with him on them.

Apparently, you didn't look further either.

Here's more about it that I found by following a link in the very article you linked to.

The unnamed source didn't hear a word of it, but since you're all about Sherman being the bad guy, the unnamed source's word is gospel to you.

The other point is that you said that what happened between the 2 of them was because of onfield trash talk during the game, but there are 2 different people saying it started during the offseason and 1 of them didn't hear a word that was said.

Seriously? The Sherman incident was a huge firestorm all week. If there was any trash talk on the field, do you honestly think it wouldn't have been replayed endlessly?

What do you mean you don't buy it? You saw that Sherman tried to shake his hand, but you don't buy that Sherman tried to shake his hand? That makes no sense.

I'm beginning to think you like to argue for arguments' sake. Like I said, the game wasn't over yet!! "Hellavuh game" and a "handshake," after you've just caused a receiver the worst nightmare of his career, and before the game is over, isn't "sportsmanship," it's over-the-top taunting, Sherman had no intention of being "sportsmanlike" and it was a continuation of the feuding and fighting he and he alone has been responsible for fomenting from the beginning, dating back to your citing of the incident last year. Sherman isn't just "the bad guy" to me, he's "the bad guy" to more fans. This is Sherman. This is who he is. Crabtree isn't exactly the poster boy for sportsmanship, and his start in the NFL was pretty rocky. Nonetheless, an NFL GM or coach with take ten Crabtrees before they'll touch another Richard Sherman. He's a jerk, or worse. Done here. But not before I dump your ...

    :tonofbricks:

    ... back on you.

#1, it is a debate board, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong other than disagreeing with you.

#2, you make factual errors that need to be corrected and wrong assumptions that need to be challenged and you constantly call people names and then you wonder why I'm arguing with you.

#3, nobody is forcing you to post. In fact, we don't really need these threads that exist for the sole purpose of name calling. There's plenty of heat in this thread, but not much light.

First of all, the game was effectively over. While there was time on the clock and the Seahawks still had to snap the ball 3 times, it was effectively over.

Second, who claimed it was sportsmanship? Where did I ever say that he was being sportsmanlike? As usual, you assume too much. I never said that what he did was sportsmanlike, because, unlike you, I don't know his intent.

It's possible that he was sincere, that he was attempting to smooth his little rift with Crabtree over, though I question the wisdom of trying to do so at that moment. It's also possible that he was subtly taunting Crabtree. The tone of voice Sherman used to say "helluva game" suggests he wasn't taunting, but I don't know everything like you do, so I can't say.

Were you ever an athlete, in high school, college or sanctioned recreational/competitive leagues?

If so, did you ever offer "congratulations" before the game was over??

If so, how long did it take for the broken nose to heal?

You have an incredible knack for "restating" the opponent's argument -- the problem being that you leave out the key elements that prove the point and argue against the rest of the post. That's called "cherry picking" and it's a logical fallacy.

Sheez!! Done here, for real this time.

I have restated nothing and I'm cherry picking nothing. I said it was possible that he was sincere and I also said that it was possible that he was taunting.
Other than the fact that I disagree with you, I have no idea what your problem with this statement is.

Richard Sherman has a lot for a 4.0 Stanford college graduate. Really such a smart aleck!
