the thing is, as I see it, most state governors and legislatures do not have what it takes to nullify unconstitutional federal gun restrictions.

 

The states won't do it because too much of their funding comes from the federal government.

They won't do anything because the majority of the American people support such things as stricter background checks. Something like 80% are in favor of that but the do-nothing Republicans, bought off by the NRA, won't act.

 

Are 80% of Americans in favor of requiring a background check when borrowing a friend's hunting rifle? (original Reid bill)

Are 80% of Americans in favor of requiring a background check if it cost law-abiding citizens up to $125, thus creating a defacto tax? Or if it weakens mental health privacy laws? (Schumer-Toomey-Manchin Amendment)

The "surface" question of "do you support stricter background checks?" is easy to answer; but as we're fond of saying, the devil is in the details.

FTW: Do YOU support having to conduct a background check on your friend before lending him/her one of your weapons? Do YOU support charging law-abiding gun-owners up to $125 to conduct such background checks every time they want to lend a friend a single-shot hunting rifle? Do YOU support reducing privacy protection of mental health records "relevant" to background checks?

And if you do, why?

 

The main thrust of the article appears to be ObamaCare, which is why I brought up federal funding. States receive far too many federal dollars earmarked for health care. I can't see them wanting to give this up. It would not only jeopardize the people who depend on it for their health, but would also take away from those who steal from it to line their own pockets.

I have no idea if states profit from federal in any way in regards to gun control so I can't comment on that.
