Any bicyclist out there? If so, what kind of bike/setup do you have? If you have a bike what kind of cyclist are you?

My wife and I are looking for bikes. Until this past Friday, neither of us had been on a bike since we were teenagers. She jumped on a trike and rode it around the parking lot right into my truck. I tried the Electra 21d. All I can say is I didn't fall off or run into anything ftw.

I've basically been browsing online for a commuter bike. I found this website http://www.worksmancycles.com and like their urban commuter. But, I want to be able to try a bike on and have local service when needed. I've been to W4lmart, Target and Dick's Sporting goods. The few bikes that suit me don't seem to be very solid. If you have any suggestions on a bike for a ruggedly handsome big boned dude, let me know.

I have a Trek Calypso Cruiser that I've had for about ten years. I ride it everywhere and it takes an incredible amount of abuse.

I wish I knew what are the good bikes now but I have a Raleigh Competition from 1974 that I still ride! It was a racing bike but I modified it to replace the sew-up tires to regular road wheels and used it to bike over 10,000 miles before I had kids. :) I haven't ridden in years though!

I chose other. I commute on a Trek Dual Sport 8.3. Unless it's wet outside, I commute on my bike.

Stay away from department store bikes and buy a good one from your local bike shop. I'm going to be saving up for a Surly Troll for errand runs, or maybe the Big Dummy.

Training for the MS 150 this year.

Schwinn mountain bike I've had for about 16 yrs; wife has one also; 4300 acres of power company property behind us we've ridden all over during that time; I took lame, bought a quad, bike's in need of repair now, may fix it and start riding again, been thinking about trying it anyway.

I checked other; I like to explore and go places I've never been before, mountain bikes are good for that.

I haven't owned or ridden a bike for about 15 years now, but I was always on a bike growing up. I used to ride a banana-seat bike to school. I was never great at popping wheelies, but I could stay up quite a while. Later I had a nice ten-speed that I loved.

I can sit on the handlebars and ride backwards, I once rode about 5 miles on the beach without falling like that.

My banana seat bike looked exactly like this one, my favorite bike of all time.

One day I was coming home from Junior High, popping wheelies when my front wheel fell off. I got pitched off the front of the bike and put my hands out in front of me so I wouldn't smash my face on the street. Took all the meat off of both of my palms. OUCH!!

    Good memories. :tongue3:

The shop we're looking at carries Surly. A little pricey for what I want to pay for a first bike, but I like the BD.

I've been looking at the reviews on the bike I'm interested in. The bear in this picture looks like he could have written this review:

Strengths: Comfort, low gear, accessories, light enough to lift up into truck, durable

Weaknesses: Look a bit dorky on it

If you go with a department store bike, you will find it to be a maintenance nightmare, if not a dangerous machine.

My Trek is an entry level bike. They've made it "affordable" by equiping it with low quality parts where safety won't be sacrificed. ($700) I've replaced the saddle ($150) and now I need to replace the pedals ($200) with quality components.

Buy the best and cry once.

700 bucks for a bicycle???? I'd cry more than once. My favorite of all time was a 24" Schwinn I had. That thing was tough as nails. I wrecked a couple times on that thing racing my baby sister. I'd always end up "racking" myself on the handle bars.

On time, dad got us a ten speed(26") to share. It was a boy's bike, so you know where the bar was. I wasn't tall enough for my feet to touch the ground when I sat on it and my butt slid off the seat. The bar was "gracious" enough to "catch" me , so that I wouldn't hit the ground.

Schwinn's are good bikes (or used to be, don't know about now). I'm thinkin' I gave $350.00 for mine around 96-97; what would that equate to in todays economy?

I found mine to be very rugged; it's traveled many miles off road rough terrain, including railroad tracks.

That's between five and six hundred in today's dollars.

The Schwinn dad bought me was from an area "stock market" and got it for $25.00, if I remember correctly. It was around 1985-1986...

I mountain bike, actually desert bike would be more accurate. I ride down jeep trails, through sand washes, rough and rocky terrain, along side big washes, up and down small hills and inclines and through the desert. It's nice because I live about 5 miles out of town so right out my gate is is the start of my course.

I use a Specialized Stumpjumper which I paid around $2,000 for.

I don't do anything too risky because I don't bounce as well as I used to. Occasionally, I need to pick up my feet when crossing paths with a rattler.

I bought a police bike off Craigslist for a college student that had her bike stolen and it was a very solid bike for $100.

I would love to ride again but, with my knees, I afraid I would get a couple miles away from home an have to hitch hike back home. :(

I hate the fact as I always wear a skirt.....a ladies bike is not so easily come by...mud guards, chain guard and a SEAT that is not designed for a block of wood....they are beyond belief as an item of torture.
