    I started riding a bike today went 4 miles. Will be working up to 8 miles. I weighed in at 341 (I am 6' 5" so it is not as bad as it might sound) although my goal is to lose 100 pounds.


    My cough as improved greatly and I am not eating cough drops anymore.


    I am also going on an oatmeal diet with supplements for the next month.


    If you think of it I would appreciate prayer.

    You got it Rev!! It's tough and it takes time but keep at it.

    I'm not thrilled with oatmeal diet though. Can you explain what it is in case I'm misunderstanding what it might be?

    It is oatmeal three times a day. I have used it in the past and it goes a long way to build momentum in losing weight. I also drink a ton of water and a supplement called Moringa alofera. Very very low in calories and fat.

    I don't think many doctors or nutritionists would recommend that. It's not balanced and it's not a good lifestyle change to get you to where you want to be. :(

    Eating real foods in a good balance will help you get you started on your weight loss goal AND keep your body healthy.

    Those same doctors want me to weigh 195 pounds. Can't ever happen. I would be anorexic. Maintining an appropriate body fat count automatically prevents that from ever happening. Since I am getting my supplemental vities I will do well. This is not the first time I have done this.

    You gonna get darn tired of oatmeal realllllll quick. Better a balanced diet of Fruit, veggies & protein. something your gonna want to live on the the rest of your life. Bread is my big downfall & Baked Goods are my wives problem.....ya know the freakin Little Debbie s & Entermans (total crap). I just make sure the breads not white, not enriched & only natural ingredients. Then I like beans (Lentil bean soup, black beans, garbanzo beans---put them in a salad), also salad with a variety of different leafy veggies......and eat as much broccoli as possible....preferably raw. For protein.....well I get fresh eggs from my home grown chickens & the wife buys this Organic Chicken Strips. Truthfully I dont eat that but I do buy Boca Burgers (soy protein) & I eat that allot (to choke it down I put salsa on it. And allot of water & I mean allot (especially if your exercising).

    So dont do the fads dude.....the bike, walks & horse riding will burn off the excess, you just learn to eat responsibly & stop the crud food.

    Oh & find something ya like as reward food. I like apples so I buy them even if they are out of season. Then Walmart has this big jar of natural apple sauce....I have that & I add my own cinnamon.

    Actually 195 is in the normal range for a person 6'5" tall. That gives you a BMI of 23.1

    If you have been eating a balanced diet the best thing to do is to continue eating the balanced diet but cut down on size of the portions. Doing that reduced my BMI from 25.1 to 22.6.

    Whatever you do, stick with it. I predict in the long run you will feel a lot better.

    Actually it doesn't. I went to a personal trainer and he figured with no body fat at all I weigh 215. The above figure is incorrect. If I add between 13 to 20% body fat that puts me at around 220-to 230.

    OK. I was going by a BMI calculator.

    Values given:

    Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5
    Normal weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9
    Overweight: BMI is 25 to 29.9
    Obese: BMI is 30 or more

    These are averages and do not take into consideration frame types.

    If you are a large frame person the weight you gave is in the ballpark.

    Regardless, stick with the program.

    Muscle mass has a lot to do with it as well as the size of the frame and my doctor wanted me to lose that as well. The weight has been a result of an on the ob injury to the back in 99. I am now at a point where I can physical stand the amount of excessive needed to do something about my weight.

    Sounds like we are about the same size, although I'm a little heavier than you. We should be offensive linemen! :D

    That's a good goal. It's going to take a while to get there, so don't get discouraged. May I suggest that the next time you go to the doctor for a checkup, ask them to do a blood test and check your testosterone level. I've been trying to lose weight for years with no effect and I recently discovered my T level is massively low. Now they're in the process of trying to figure that out (see my own prayer thread), but it explains why I've been having the problems I've had.

    I pray for you more than you probably expect. :wavey: I'll definitely keep you in prayer as I go through my own health issues.

    The BMI is shoddy science. Do some reading up on it.

    Our friend here is 6'05", same height as me, and he probably has a large frame with wide shoulders.

    The BMI assumes that a taller person has a frame the size of a 5'8" person, just stretched out.

    A number of years ago, I got heavy due to a change in jobs where I had very little physical activity. My weight got up to 295 and I started working out and jogging every day. I used the BMI as the standard because that's what I was told and got my weight down to 215 pounds. I went to the doctor because of a bad cold and he was shocked at my weight and said I needed to put on about 15-20 pounds because I was underweight and it was affecting my immune system. I did and I looked better and felt better.

    195 pounds for a 6'05" person with a large frame is absolutely ridiculous. Most people don't realize it until they see it though.

    OK, I just read through the entire thread. Some comments.

    BMI is a good indicator for proper weight for most people. For big men, not so much. At 6' 5" I think goal of 240 is a great number. Slow and steady weight loss is what you want, for you to lose 100 lbs. it should take you about 12-14 months. You can do it!

    The oatmeal diet will not work long term. You said you've used it a couple of times, which tells me whatever you've done in the past didn't stick. Using the oatmeal plan for a couple of weeks could be a great way to jump start the weight loss, see immediate results and give you motivation. But you need a life long solution.

    Weight loss is simply an easy math problem - - take in less calories than you burn and you will lose weight. You can, and should eat almost anything you want, otherwise you will get bored and revert to your old ways, and the weight comes back on.

    I started a calorie counting, exercise counting plan the day after the Super Bowl last year. I am 6' 3" and I weighed 230. My goal was to get down to 205, which I attained in early June. Once I got there I decided I wanted to get under 200 (known as One-derLand) just to say I got there and because I weighed 195 when I graduated from high school, and I got there in mid-August. I weighed myself this morning and I'm at 206. So it has worked for me.

    The reason I am back at this again is because my health changed. I began snoring and losing a lot of sleep as a result of it. I am now on a bipap machine. Saw bones said lack of sleep contributes to weight gain. Also I am not as physically active as I was. Hence the bike riding. Given those two factors I have gained some of my weight back.

    So to get the weight loss momentum going this is a great way to start. It gets your body burning fat and you lose actual body weight rather than just water weight.

    All you need to do is to come here to NY and start shoveling the snow from our riding arena and paddocks!! Oh - and chisel the frozen manure from the ice too. :) THAT will get your heart a-racin'!
