The PROSTEANT Chaplain

    Yesterday, I went to a MOVE* program at the VA.
    A small portion of the session was the spiritual side.
    The VA chaplain came to speak. A person (not me) asked what church background he was from. The Chaplain did not answer the question. He repeated "I AM THE PROSTEANT CHAPLAIN"!

    (btw, I happen to know he is ABC)

    So, do you think he should have answered the mans question?

    Nope. He works for the VA. They won't let him discuss Christ unless specifically asked, and only then outside the program structure. That includes denominational discussions.

    If he was asked after the meeting ended, and declined to answer, then I would have a problem. But not in this scenario.

    Basically I tend to agree with what thisnumbersdisconnected posted.

    As a USAF veteran, this is pretty much the case for military chaplains as it applies to any public meeting.

    Even though they are chaplains, they are (first and foremost) commissioned military officers who, when acting in a military capacity, must (so to speak) "tow the line" of that chaplain's military chain of command.

    Those folks who are completely unfamiliar with "the way 'things' are in the military" probably do not understand this, but, alas, that is (and probably always was) the situation that military chaplains are faced with.

    FWIW, I personally wish it were otherwise, but, as almost any military veteran (regardless if he or she was ever directly connected with the military's chaplain service or not) can testify, that's simply "the way it is" in our military.

    I don't remember it like that - and we were in about the same time - It was very well known that our (Air Force) Chaplains were United Methodist and 7th Day Adv
    (though I was Army- I went across town to the Air Force chapel)

    I don't see a problem with the Chaplain just mentioning his denomination. Now - if he started to proselytize - thats another story.
