Pet Peeve of Mine

    As if I don't have enough already...

    The practice of sports commentators, sports talk show hosts, and now the general populace's propensity to use an elite player's name to describe an entire category of people.

    Example: the NFL needs more quarterbacks like "the Peyton Mannings and the Brett Favres of the world" that will be the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave.

    It's non-sensical. There is only one Brett Favre in the world. There are not "Brett Favres of the world."

    Imagine this spilling over to other areas of the world. (and it's starting.) "We need more people like the Albert Einsteins of the world if we're going to discover how to make efficient superconductors." Or, "Washington needs more people like the Ronald Reagans of the world if we want to see sustained, high level economic growth."

    We all have our pet peeves but where pet peeves go this one seems to miss the point. When a specific name is mentioned in the way you have suggested it simply means that that individual has displayed traits or characteristics that some folks find attractive in say a quarter back, but does not find those traits or characteristics in very many quarter backs.

    In other words the specific people named seem to have a standard or ability above others to be emulated. Nothing wrong with that.

    I get what you're saying. My objection is to the phrase, "the X's of the world". There is only one of this person in the world.

    If they want to point out that this person has standards or abilities above others why not simply say, "we need more quarterbacks like Brett Favre, someone who was the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave."

    Well people are not always the best communicators but I get what they are saying. As a pastor I often have to look into the real intent of what people mean. If I try to be too pedantic then it can come across as overly critical.
