Be an example, read ... and encourage your children and grandchildren to read.

I was able to turn my two older ones into readers but my son fought it tooth and nail. However, I just got him a large book on the history of the automobile and I think he's hooked. :) Now to work on my youngest.....

When I was in the Army a lot of guys read the material for Officers Candidate School - but I wasn't interested in comic books.

I had more time to read while I was in the Army than any other time of my life, even retirement. The unit I was with was on standby all the time to take over 7th Army communications if the Russians invaded. We sat, and sat and sat. There is only so much time a person can spit and polish the equipment in their mobile communications hut. The hut was on a deuce and a half truck. I remember setting a goal one month of reading at least 100 pages a day .... and I made the goal. I think that was the month I read The Alexander Quartet, the four books set in Egypt by Lawrence Durrell.

The books deal with the theme of the convergence of Eastern and Western metaphysics
