We were dealing with an adoption.

We had to get approval from the doctor to release information on the patient.

I thought this was taking patient privacy a little too far.

    What do you think?

We wanted to adopt a cat from the animal shelter
    .

    .
They wanted a statement from our VET about how we cared for our pet - which died about 2 years ago of old age.
    .

    .
but we had to give approval to the Vet to release our late pets records.

    Thoughts?

Not unusual. Did the same thing a number of years ago when we adopted a shepherd mix. Helps identify animal abusers.

I didn't have a problem with the contacting the vet - but we had to give approval?

Would you rather not to have to give approval?

If you were an animal abuser, would you want the vet of your last pet releasing records to the shelter? You cannot incriminate yourself. That's why they have the release policy.

In a way, it's a test, but it also provides valid information.

Why wouldn't your approval be good enough?

And they seriously are starting this if you adopt a pet? That's ridiculous! I thought the contracts given out at vets now were a bit over the top. Figure I won't have pets after this one goes.

The delving into people's lives is insane. No cat for you unless you prove you're not a pet abuser!

What if you did not have a pet before? Psych profile? Character references, What does this ink blot look like?

My Brother-in-law was going to adopt a dog. The application process required references for his landlord and employer, as well as a statement that he would spend "whatever it takes" in the case of an illness. He never had a pet before so no vet reference.

    True story:

My sisters a well known breeder of a special breed of dogs.

At one time the White House approached her to see if she'd provide a dog for them.

She knows her dogs and knows what works best for the breed.

She usually requires a long phone interview and then a personal interview at the residence of the buyer. She remains a co-owner after the purchase. There are no dogs of this breed in a shelter.

The WH wouldn't have been a good fit.
    She turned them down.

    Wow.

Agencies are concerned about the welfare of the animals that they place. The procedures are in place to weed out neglectful and abusive homes. What is wrong with that?

The biggest problem is that people don't see the problem. It's been bred out of Americans.

Perhaps you would explain what you think the problem is.

It is the assumption that one must prove they are good enough for that adoption agency (government agency)before being permitted to become a pet parent. (become a parent)

BTW, Obama said he's gonna sign that bill into law about unlocking cell phones.

I tried to NOT give my SSN to the electric company as law permits and they said because I would not, I had to have a credit check instead and it could take six weeks to run and approve. If I gave my SSN, they would turn my electric on right then. What's a gal to do if she wants to comply with the law and provide her adopted, micro-chipped dog with air conditioning, which is now considered a need and neglect if not provided in the home to dependants?

I could go all over the map with this.

But I take it you get my point now?

Just so I understand you, would you have a problem with the background check if the animal shelter was not government run? Because nowhere in the OP is the government mentioned.

Also, the first thing any credit check asks you is: What is your SSN#? There is virtually no way you could have avoided providing it if you are trying to establish your creditworthiness.

What does Obama and cell phones and the electric company have anything to do with adopting a shelter pet? If you are afraid of background checks, simply don't adopt. Or buy a goldfish...

Try to put yourself in the place of the people who care for these animals. They are responsible for and care about their well-being. It is first priority. They want conscientious people who are able to and can afford to take care of these pets. They also do not want people adopting on impulse. They do not want them returned, neglected, or abused.

They don't run credit checks on those who give SSN's, they say. It's a way to bully those that don't.

It has to do with ever growing intrusion into our lives. Of course it is going to sound all great and wonderful if it is done to keep puppies and kittens and babies and the children and sweet elderly people safe. Anyone who disagrees sounds plain mean. Don't they like babies and kittens? :)

A criminal background check is not credit check. You do realize that there is a difference, right?

You're not understanding what I'm saying. When you want to adopt a pet they ask for your SSN# so they can do a background check on you, checking for any criminal activity. If you don't want to give them your SSN# for a background check, they give you the option of letting them perform a credit check on you. FYI, the first piece of information you must supply on a credit application/check after your name is your SSN#.

You may thank criminals and sadists for this intrusion into our lives. Or do you think there is some conspiracy to collect personal information on law abiding citizens for some nefarious government action in the future?

Again, do you believe this idea of protecting animals from animal torturers is just a front for the government to collect data--data that they already have recorded in various other agencies? Think about it--if the government was as evil and corrupt as you seem to be implying, if they wanted your SSN# they'd simply get it from your employer or get it from the IRS or from the Social Security Administration, or from your health insurance company, or from your bank, or from your.....need I go on?

No offense to your sister, but if I buy a dog, it's my dog. No way she'd get my business. Thanks but no thanks.
Congressman Jerry Litton, back in the 70s, was advocating that people stop giving their SSN's because it was -- and still is -- an illegal use of the SSN. He won the Missouri U.S. Senate nomination in 1976 with a huge upset of two well-entrenched Missouri Democrats, and he had only served two terms in the House. He died in a plane crash flying from his home in Chillicothe to a celebration in Kansas City that very night. Coincidence?

Well, yeah, is was. But the point is, it has long been said we shouldn't be required to allow creditors to break the law.
That's another thing that gripes me. We're required to put A/C in homes in every jurisdiction in the Kansas City metro. Now I'll be the first to admit, I wouldn't live in a home without A/C, but I grew up on a farm where we had not clue what A/C was -- at least, until we installed it in the barn where we milked cows. Boy, was Mom miffed about that! She had A/C the next year -- when we started leasing out our operation, moved to town and Dad bought an insurance agency.

Now they say it's a necessity for pets? Wonder they would have thought of the pioneers when they got to Missouri 215 years ago, and didn't have A/C for their animals? Maybe they all prayed for Thomas Edison and Dave Lennox to be born soon?

    It wasn't a political statement.
It was out of a love of her dogs.

Turns out some other breeder provided one - now there are two dogs that don't fit.

Some people just aren't meant to care for dogs or cats.
A screening process is a good thing.

...but there are some extremes in the process sometimes.
