19 Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise prophetic [l]utterances.

    1 Thessalonians 5:19-20 Nasb

Are there still those prophetic utterances today, and we are to discern and judge if from God or not?

The "sign gifts" were for Israel during the times of the apostles.
I'd say that "walking in the Spirit" has all but disappeared today,
and "quenching the Spirit" is the norm; so that a prophecy
would be rare indeed, and few, if any, would "catch on".

Another question may be, "is there a need for any other prophetic utterances?"

Let's try to understand what we know to be God's Word first....that will take the rest of our lives.

    valid question...

is there any real need to have furhter utterances, since we now have the completed word?

Could preaching from God's word be part of Paul's admonition?

Could this also include a simple word of encouragement to someone or a bit of wisdom?

Does this have to mean direct revelation from God?

Something I have always wondered about is why Baptists say that the gift of prophecy has ceased. yet there are going to be those two prophets in the end times described in the book of Revelation.

Seems to be an operation to be done by the Holy Spirit as in Acts, as he corrects them for heeding "false revelations" that some claim God told them to tell us that Jesus already had come back, but that they had missed it!

many who hold to that see them as being either moses/Elijah, or even Enoch, so a special case!
