Perhaps the nearest thing to a consensus on the Baptist Board is the truth and infallibility of scripture. While we sometimes differ on what scripture means, almost no one approaches particular passages with skepticism. The Bible is the inspired and infallible word of God. Why do you believe it to be so? Possible answers could be:

    • It lines up with extra biblical historical accounts.
    • Sixty-six books by thirty something writers could not present such a unified tapestry without divine inspiration.
    • The ancient church declared it to be so.
    • I know in my heart that the Bible is true.
    • It has been such a part of my lifelong culture that I cannot possibly imagine the Bible to be anything but the inspired word of God.

I don’t intend to debate anyone on this thread but if others think it appropriate to debate, I will follow them with interest.

So go ahead, tell us why you believe the Bible to the inspired and infallible word of God.

I believe all of those points.... But add Hebrews 11... And pose this question why would those mentioned in that chapter in the Bible be willing to DIE!... If it were not so?... Remember these received not the promise. And those after them did and also died adhering to the promise received and down though out history laided down their lives for that belief. Archeology also back up the Bible and the history behind it. Without a doubt the Bible is the inspired word of the most high God and the journey of his people and their redemption by the sacrifice of his Son Jesus Christ. and his resurrection from the dead, by that sacrifice, giving eternal life to his sheep.

Being willing to die is indeed a strong witness. It demonstrates a strong belief in the truth of one's faith. But those men who flew planes into the Pentagon and World Trade Center were also willing to die.

If man could he wouldn't. If he would he couldn't. Scripture is so full of wisdom and historical facts that it would be impossible for any man or group of people to write such a concise work that one can live their life by and consistently count on as truth.

The scriptures are full of 'the word of the lord came to me, as the Lord spoke to me, God spoke to him" etc, and Jesus stated all of the OT was accurate to the very letter, and paul confirmed that ALL of the NT books were also!

It intersting that today there is the debate about which translation is best. Jesus never debated that issue even though there was more than one Greek translation of the Hebrew and Aramaic OT.

    Because ....

It is either indirectly from Him through inspiration of others, or those who wrote it were kooks!

I choose to believe He inspired EVERY word in the Bible. Nothing is there by accident. The OT stories of the flood, Jericho, Daniel in the lions den, creation in six days with one day for rest ..... well I hae no reason to challenge any of these things. And they are not myths. I believe if God wanted to send a big fish to swallow Jonah, he was the only one with the supernatural power and ability to pull that off. And if instead He wanted to send a goldfish to swallow Jonah, He would have managed this too!

It is infallible, because I choose to believe it is, and every word in it is from Him to inspire, exhort, teach, challenge, convict, encourage, lift up, and strengthen us in our darkest moments of doubts!

God is real, and HIs manuel and road map to life is infallible in every way! To believe anything less is to have doubt, and that dows not work for my kind of faith!

I've seen to much of His supernatural power and work in my life to not believe He is the great I am!

    Great question.

I was taught to believe it as a child. That is why I believe it. Throughout college and my adult life, there have been many times of serious doubt and perplexing questions. However, minding my errand at the feet of Christ, and seeing His provision of real, timely answers to these doubts and questions have served to confirm it.

Is that all? The Bible is infallible because you choose to believe it is? That reminds me of the unorthodox saying: "God said it. I believe it. That settles it." The fact that one believes it does not settle it. God said it --period.
Well, to reduce the Bible down to a manual is not quite sufficient.

Here is what Quenstedt, a Lutheran theologian, said a few centuries ago:
"The canonical Holy Scriptures in the original text are the infallible truth and are free from every error; in other words, in the canonical sacred Scriptures there is found no lie, no falsity, no error, not even the least, whether in subject matter or expressions, but in all things and all the details that are handed down in them, they are most certainly true, whether they pertain to doctrines or morals, to history or chronology, to topgraphy or nomenclature. No ignorance, no thoughtlessness, no forgetfulness, no lapse of memory can and dare be ascribed to the amanuenses of the Holy Ghost in their penning the Sacred Writings."
Personal testimony certainly has its place.

To not believe it is infallible is a world biblical view. I choose to believe and hold to a BIBLICAL WORLD VIEW, and that makes the Bible infallible....thank you :jwavey:

Where does scripture claim to be infallible? To claim infallibility is to lower the standard of what scripture claims. Scripture claims that it is God's word and it is inspired by God. To make any other claim is to lower it to man's standard of acceptance of correctness. Scripture is way more than that. It has life.

Where does scripture make the claim that it is God's word? For the record, I believe it is the word of God but I don't recall where in scripture it expressly says so.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
