Back in 1965 in downtown Washington, DC I got a tattoo. Course, it's very small and even with a short sleeve shirt, you can't see it. The thing cost me $3.00.

The other day I had opportunity to speak with a very attractive young woman about 21 years old who sports two tattoo's on her back..., and perhaps elsewhere and I couldn't help but speak to her about it. Specifically, asking the why, for being tattoo'd to begin with.

Well, her response was typical of today's youth and she offered several reason's to support her decision. I told her that in my humble opinion..., females come with a natural beauty to begin with. That while some think a tattoo will "enhance", in reality it just takes away. Garlic will enhance the spaghetti sauce but too much will ruin it.

Under the Law..., Leviticus 19:28 comes to mind and a direct order was delivered. Under Grace...

To me, tattoo's are encourage toward youth of today simply because it gives them a feeling of identity. To the tattoo artist it's mere income and an extension of "his" artwork. It's a wonder they don't sign their work as would all other artists.

Coming full circle here..., aren't we all guilty of offering forth an "extension" of another's position or belief when it comes to biblical issues?

Do we spend much time thinking for ourselves or just copying others? Yes, we need to rely on those who have been there and done that but why then, do we shut down the thinking process and accept the bait..., hook, line and sinker? Another's belief or position does not constitute fact.

    ...just rambling.

I think it is kind of inappropriate and rude to tell a stranger that her tattoos detract from her natural beauty and that too much garlic ruined her sauce.

, yet I think that you missed the point. Small, cheap tattoos are to be preferred over large, expensive ones.

Well people generally take pride in their tattoos which can sometimes be symbolic of something personal in their lives. I think it is a little presumptuous to tell a stranger that you disapprove of their choice in tattoos. That and quite frankly, what business is it of yours?

I don't have any tattoos. I've considered it and talked myself out of it several times on two points

First, what is the tattoo going to look like when I'm 75 years old? Fading ink, sagging skin, sunspots....who knows?

Second, imho, a tattoo should express where I'm at in my ideals, or what I think is cool, or something else I'm trying to tell somebody. What happens as I (hopefully) mature over time? Would a tattoo I get at 23 years old still express me in 50 years?

I became convinced 20 years ago that I didn't want to roll the dice on those two points.

As for girls, I've tended to agree with the OP. I just never thought it added, only detracted. But, that's not a blanket I've thrown over every example.

I've seen girls who would make me drool without tattoos, and the addition of a couple of tattoos on her back or side would just about make me faint with excitement.

But I've also seen great looking girls ruin their beauty with tattoos on their neck, chest, ear lobes, temples....

Like makeup. I've seen runway models, who might be naturally beautiful, just ruined by insane makeup designed to enhance the clothing. No thanks.

Or a little eyeliner and such can really enhance a girl's beauty

I tend to see the beauty of a woman in her facial features and body shape. But, like clothing and makeup, that beauty can be added to or taken from with how accessories are applied.

Quite frankly, Use of Time..., I'll ask you the same. What Business Is It Of Yours?

Quite frankly, I DID NOT just blurt it out regarding her tattoo's. We engaged in small talk for a while prior to my inquiry regarding her tattoo's..., but see..., this issue of the Tattoo's was merely laying the ground work for the topic I desired to engage in with others on this forum.

So, for your enlightenment and further disapproval, I'll provide it again. Enhanced.

There is no need to be overly defensive here. The difference in who's business it is, is that I am responding to your thread where as you are telling a stranger that their tattoos detract from their beauty.

As to the rest I say that people often do follow the herd so to speak. Those that don't are called leaders.

...then may I ask..., what's the need for you to be overly aggressive?

You know, this is the stupid side of a forum. Someone like me... what ain't got no Yale Edumacation... makes a post and here comes the wolves. The critical wolves taking exception to anything and everything. Wanting to inflating their ego at the expense of another. Well, good for you "Use of Time".

I think I'll put my USE OF TIME to better Use and seek refuge with a more mature clientele. The forum is yours!!!

Several years ago a man that had a tattoo had either been in the penitentiary or the navy. Now you see a lot of young people warring them and to me it looks awful.

I don't have any tattoos nor do I plan on getting one.

That said, I've got more than a few friends who do and they vary from full sleeves on their arms to a tiny butterfly on an ankle. If they're done well they can really be beautiful.

Our church had a significant ministry with people in recovery. Often they will have tattoos when they come in. Many have taken up covering over or adding tattoos for significant milestones in their life. It is rare for a month to go by when someone isn't standing up, showing (an appropriate place) new tattoo and taking about their faith in Christ.

    Its pretty amazing.

    I have three tattoo's.

One on the ridge of my right palm

Another on my left antecubital fossa (the other side of the elbow)

And the third on my right hip.

I got them all before I was 12 years old.

Each the result of an accidental stabbing with a lead pencil.

I don't plan on getting any others

Having worked in a nursing home years ago, I feel obligated to tell teens what their tattoos, should they get them, will look like later - and how some migrate. Around half get concerned, but the other half thinks they won't care.
After all, they have about ten-20 years before they're "really old." LOL

I agree with the concept that attempts to enhance the outside are typically in vain and generally achieve the opposite, as are most attempts to deflect attention from a person's true self and redirect it towards what someone wishes to appear to others.

That said, I have seen tattoos that obviously were not for silly purposes. The best and most touching was a father's tribute to his daughter, who tragically died at four years of age. He appeared to use it as an opportunity to discuss drunk driving with people who inquired about the tattoo.

either way, they were thought of as "rough" characters and most people tended to avoid them.

Youth can sometimes be really dumb and stupid.....

but, OTOH, I've seen some tatoos on today's guys and gals that look artfully done. They should be glad, though, that this ain' Nazi times, and more so if they're not Jews, and triple more so they live in America.
Had these been Nazi times, and they were Jews, and happened to live in Europe, some missus would've love to have their skins as lampshades.

I have a tatoo on the right thigh. It's a "sputnik" with the antennas and all, and the words sige sige sputnik (go, go sputnik) in between the upper antennas, and n1o (number 1) on the lower antennas. It's got the names of two guys around it a little ways to the top, both deceased who were my best friends who both died in one of our little gang wars.
It's a gang ink I got back in the early 60's in my teen years, the years of stupidity and dumbness.
I got another one on my left shoulder, my wife's name and mine.
one on my left hand, right above the thumb.
it's an anchor, and on its left side is a big dot, and the letters NE on top of the anchor.
Like the two names on top of the sputnik, it's got its own little story.

They were all done the old fashioned way.
The one on the thigh, 24 or 28 needles arranged neatly on a popsicle stick, tied together with a thin twine, the tips held to a flame to "sterilize" it, and then dipped in indian ink and painstakingly traced on an outline drawn on the skin. Took just a full hour, the guy was a real artist, especially when on alcohol.
The others, with a little less needles.
I ran a temperature for three days, not to mention three bloody hankies.

You think that is being overly aggressive? Wolves? That is being a tad bit dramatic. I'm just pointing out that that while I might not like overly tattooed women either, I fully understand that they probably don't care what I think and I really have no place to criticize them for it. This isn't a crusade against you, it's just an observation on a message board. I think Abraham Lincoln said it best, "it's just the internet."

    catcha monday, man.
going to Lindsay, California, to preach there.
    4 hours drive.
if wifey says yes, we're leaving now and sleep over in a hotel there so I can be fresh and ready in the morning.
if wifey says no, well, will have to bed down early, and we leave tomorrow at 5 a.m. sharp so we can get there before ten a.m.
    all up to her.
she's the secretary of treasury, and concurrently, of the war department, too.
    very powerful.
either way, won't be posting much until Monday.
maybe a short post here and there, with my phone.
my fingers are getting nimbler and quicker and I finally figured out how to shut down "autocorrect".
    hehehe.
