I would say that it makes sense about that being the third commandment in not misrepresenting the Lord in speaking for Him even though we should not curse.

James 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12 Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

That's why we need the Lord's help espcially for the words of our mouths.

Psalm 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.

I would say the article in the op was a waste of time. It is bad form to do it no matter what.

Did you agree with the authors analysis?

I disagree with the author in some cases. When people take God's name in vain, rarely (IMHO) are they asking God to exercise just wrath against a situation. It usually is an expression that immediately follows the hammer hitting the thumb. Using God's name in vain is, I believe, is referring to God as "common place." The point that "God" is not necessarily the "name of God" is foolish.

Other curse words are not necessarily taking God's name in vain, but they remain inappropriate. Many are offensive, and intended to offend or shock (sometimes as an emphasis). In this sense, they are not the mark of living a sanctified life. I can't be taking care not to offend if I am specifically choosing words that offend.

I think he was on the right track when he explained what it meant, but lost it in the application for modern times. He seems rather obsessed with slang, which is merely the use of a word, which was typically a decent word that fell from grace by having more intense/perverted meaning to it. So much so that in an English class I once had, first time offenders for breaking the no-cussing rule were given leniency if they could explain the origin of the word they used. They were shocked to discover the use of certain words in history, and that a popular one was once used by a saint in early writings. How one uses a word greatly impacts whether it is "bad" or not. People can make the best of words filthy.

Taking The Name in vain? I believe that still happens very often in modern times. For example, I once had a pastor say "G-d told me you are supposed to teach the kids in Sunday School." Other people, including pastors, have prefaced their desire to have me or someone else perform some type of work by falsely claiming G-d told him/her that was wanted.

That, in my opinion, is a common example of taking the L-rd's name in vain.
You should not say something is of divine power or directive when it is not. One should also avoid casual use of names to remain aware of how important this command is for us.

Words mean stuff. Use them with discretion.

Salty, the pastor got pretty out of sorts when I responed with that! He even held a special invitation for ladies to come up who were called to help in that area and when I was the only one left not up there, kept going and said there was one more lady not responding...it was embarrassing but I was NOT called and refused to be shamed into pretending! I was sooo tempted to look around and call out "Looks like that lady isn't here today," but held my piece.

Course, any one quoting rightly from the King James Version Bible is right to say the Lord says then.
