Joyce, an 82 year old lifelong black Democrat called C-Span to express her dismay with her party and announce that she voted straight Republican this year. She is dismayed with the Democrats stance on religion, abortion, and the poor effects of Obama’s policies on the black community and the country.

“I have noticed in years what the Democratic party has done to my people. Unemployment is higher in the black community….than anywhere else.

I cannot say, there’s no way I can continue to say that I was a Christian and stay in the Democrat party. They advocate the killing of babies, they advocate taking from the doers and giving to the ones sitting doing nothing…….”

A lifelong Democrat is just now taking issue with this?

There is nothing in the op that says she is just now taking issue with it. However, even if it were true, ......so what?

Skin color? Do you know that for sure? The OP said she is a life long Democrat so it sounds like she was just staying with the party.

Relax. I'm on your side here. There is that small part about her leaving the party just now isn't there? The so what part is that Democrats have pretty much been doing these things way before Obama took office.

I don't think she said she was leaving the party. She said she was voting strictly Republican. Not the same thing.

Um, I would think that would almost be the definition of leaving the party would it not?

Leaving the party would have to mean actually registering as a Republican. A registered Democrat can still vote a straight Republican line and still be a registered Democrat.

I meant in the Black community in general...not her specifically.

Odd ain't it? Things have been bad for Blacks in comparison to the majority for several Presidents. Democrats have held the same platform through several Presidents. But she finally took notice because there was a black President?

    Weird story.

And about the only reason I can see for making the tagline refer to her as a life long BLACK Democrat, is that this is the GOPs continuing attempt to sway the Democrat stronghold on the black vote.

Now they figure they've got to show black people that it's foolish to support the Democrats because when a black Democrat was President, Blacks were in worse shape than they were under subsequent white Presidents.

Looks like the GOP doesn't mind playing the race card when it meets their needs.

Which again is consistent with certain members of the party looking the other way with the Jesus rejecting, cult member since they really wanted to win.

    Politics.

Or it could be that Obama is black and is losing some of the black vote. Which is a reasonable point.

No, the aim is to move the Republican pointer further toward the center, which would mean still few blacks, but more 'moderate' whites voting that way.

    Far left.........moderate left......center........moderate right........far right
    ....................^.....................................................^...................
    ..............Democrat.............................................Republican...........

Either party has to establish its base on the right or left, then try to 'invade' the center, the voters that do not lean either way, or lean different ways in different elections. Since blacks are predominantly Far Left, this wont' draw many, but it may draw voters in the center, mostly white. Democrats do the same thing, by establishing their leftist base, then trying to appeal to the center with statements like "Abortions should be rare, but safe and legal," when the legal part is all they really care about.
