Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter with a half-million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. . . . This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

For every bottle of booze bought, for every cancer stick bought, for every luxary car bought, for every degree of heat about 70 in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

If you smoke 10 sticks a day - that amounts to $1825 per year. If there are 10 million smokers in the USA - that is 1.825 billion dollars.

Every gun that is built represents a life potentially defended and preserved.

And how many people could have been fed on the expensive perfume Mary poured on Jesus' feet?

So you want guns so you can shoot Jesus instead of pouring perfume on his feet?

For every gun that is built, it is more likely to decrease the price I will have to pay for the next one I purchase.

Yep! It's getting PHD! (Piled High & Deep)

Or as a friend & I used to do when this situation occurred - take off your watch & hold it over your head, because the horse manure was coming so fast that that was about all you could salvage.

The thing is that this argument could be made to apply to virtually anything--it's not specific to guns.

A counter argument is that supporting industry is as helpful to those in need as a soup kitchen--it helps someone, several someones actually, keep their job and thus puts food on their table. Helping those who have no choice but to do without is important, and something the church definitely needs to be (and in many cases is) involved in. But if people cannot keep a job, they may end up joining the already thousands who need someone else to directly help them out for a while. Jobs are the backbone of the economy.

    Seriously?

    Not a very well-thought-out reply.
