It is plain for all to see that some very transparent mendacity is being waged by some noted non-Calvinists here on the BB. In particular they wish to cast Charles H. Spurgeon in a false light. To do so with all his sermons and material on the internet so readily available displays incredible gall.

Spurgeon faced a lot of untruthful flack:

"The most infamous allegations have been brought against us, and sometime, I must fear, by men who knew them to be utterly untrue..."

Taken from his sermon :Expositions of the Doctrines of Grace 4/11/1861.

It is actually a good thing when someone, like Spurgeon,is maligned. It means the truth is stepping on many toes. Those who hate the truth will try to extinguish it, dismiss it, or pervert it, but they cannot overcome it.

Spurgeon is one of my favorite “preachers long gone.” I know that some stress that he was a moderate Calvinist (I suppose just how moderate depends on where one stands in the “Calvinistic spectrum”). It doesn’t take much to verify he held some points with a light hand, and that while he stood firm he often recognized what was his own understanding (he alluded to a potential for error of exclusion and predisposition…which he identified as a “needs be” issue as each tries to appropriate through reason a working theology). But all other Calvinists pale in comparison to Spurgeon (that’s my unqualified opinion...unqualified both in the opinion and in the giving  ).

This thread is dedicated to addressing the falsehoods attributed to Charles Spurgeon and Calvinists --the ones on the BB in particular.

There is a lumping tendency on the part of some non-Calvinists here. Remember, when you are discussing supposed beliefs of Calvinists --those beliefs must actually have been stated by Calvinists! And may I remind you that some here emphatically do not want to be identified as Calvinists. Therefore it would be quite dishonest to claim that Calvinists believe this or that --when those who say they are not Calvinists are neverthless stuffed into a Calvinist group.

Let's start a litany of lies list which some(one) here has attributed to Charles Spurgeon.

    His position was not TULIP.

He did not believe in limited atonement.

    He was a conflicted Calvinist.

The above three statements are utterly untrue. Evidence has been marshalled against those foolhardy assertions --but facts do not matter to some. A Christian should tell the truth. That's a rather basic premise yet it is ignored to maintain an agenda at all costs --even the loss of integrity.

Spurgeon's Calvinism is a historical fact. But while he was an unabashed proponent of TULIP he never allowed any doctrine to eclipse what he considered his greater mandate: to preach the gospel. Of course, to Spurgeon, Calvinism was the gospel, so he never had to worry about deviating from his gospel focus.

Not to some on here, it appears.

He was very adept at explaining how God's sovereignity and man's responsibilty meshed together. Sad that many can't grasp this...

I believe God has to allow , indeed enable a person to see these truths.

many who start out fighting against it study themselves into the position in the very midst of fighting against it.

I knew a man in WV one time that this happened to:wavey::thumbsup:

I knew another man who fought against God, His word ,and people, and started to read the bible to find out why it was all wrong....that man no longer exists as God has transformed him into a new creation:applause:

I bought a set of Spurgeon sermons ( New Park Street Pulpit & Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit) in 1980. I have read these books through and through and most sermons more than once. I would credit these sermons turning me from Arminian to Calvinist. Let me say this, all Calvinist don't believe exactly the same way Spurgeon did. The Church I began to attend about the same time I started reading the Spurgeon sermons believes the five points but hold to a Antinomian view that Spurgeon didn't. I had a great spiritual struggle when I was first beginning to see Sovereign grace through the Spurgeon sermons and then the same thing began to happen when I heard the pastor of the church I was attending preach thing contrary to Spurgeon. Spurgeon didn't give altar calls but he was not afraid to say come to Christ to his listeners. The pastors view of salvation is if you realize what I am preaching is the truth then you are in Christ. I read after A.W. Pink which the pastor say's, Pink holds to some legalist views. I once ask the pastor of the church I attend what he thought about Spurgeon, The Pastor replied, Spurgeon was weak in a lot of his beliefs. The many Calvinist preachers which I have heard in church services spend a lot of time trying to convince their listeners they were never in Christ till they closed with Christ listening to a Sovereign grace preacher. There are some good messages from these preachers I enjoy hearing like Christ is all my salvation, and Christ is my righteousness, and Christ saves sinners. What I have learned through the years is to read your bible, know what the scripture say's and take no words from man if it don't line up with scripture.

Calvinism is much broader then some seem to indicate that it is, as evidenced by new calvinists. reformed, Baptist calvininist, new Covenant theology, etc!
