    We never cancel a Sunday service unless it is unsafe to be open (usually in snow here on Long Island but rarely can it also be due to hurricane or severe nor'easter). We always will have Christmas Eve services as well but nothing on Christmas.

    It would seem that if "Christmas" was indeed a celebration of Christ that the Church would meet that day, regardless of the day of the week. just sayin.:love2:

    My church celebrated the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ (with an emphasis on the birth but a thread through all of it) on the Sunday before and on Christmas Eve with a wonderful Christmas message - one of the best my preacher as given about Christmas.

    No, we did not meet Christmas Day as there is nothing special or holy about that particular date of 12/25.

    Outstanding! but, If there is nothing special or holy about that particular day (which I agree) why the celebration on the "eve" of that particular day?

    We celebrate on Christmas Eve so that families can be together on Christmas. When Christmas is on Sunday, we will have Christmas Eve services and Christmas Day as well.

    In 2011 the church I was attending actual didn't have a Lord's Day service because it was "Christ mas".

    This, I just can't understand. It's supposed to be a "holy" celebration. SO holy that the Church will fore go a normal gathering? GO figure.

    Nope - Nothing pre-empts a Sunday service but unsafe travel conditions. We just changed it from 9 and 11 am services to one 10 am service and that was it. It was a wonderful service and we were all able to be home by about 12:30 pm ("we" meaning staff - the service was over by 11:30).

    Christmas Eve we had a silent communion at my church. I liked it. You go in, are given a paper with scripture and instructions to reflect while different songs are played on the piano. Candles are lit and stuff. And then they had communion. Then you were given time to pray. Then it was time to go.
    Not a word is spoken throughout the entire thing. Just you and God.

    We come together as a church on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day because - culturally - in my area, more people are able to attend on Christmas Eve.

    It isn't about celebrating a time period.

    May I suggest, no more people are "able" but "willing" to set aside an hour or so on the "eve" than on the Morning of. After all , the morning of is dedicated to opening the presents from Santa and sadly not many are committed to Christ to the point to forsake that.

    Nope, there is nothing "holy" about Christmas morning. There is nothing "holy" about Christmas Eve night.

    And .... there is nothing "holy" about church attendance.

    We gather together on one event or the other because we WANT to celebrate the life of Christ together as a church body. We have a desire to exalt His name and recognize that if it were not for His birth then our salvation would have never been.

    What difference does it make if it is Christmas Eve, the 24th or Christmas morning, the 25th? Both are just days on a calendar.

    Maybe you should be Catholic: they always meet on Christmas day. In fact, attendance on Christmas is mandatory. :smilewinkgrin:
