What difference does it make? Earth is here. We are here. "Before the beginning of space and time, God created." Genesis 1:1.

As the Germans say, "Jetzt geht mir ein Licht auf!"

Using assumptions, we can believe the earth is 5 billion years old, or less than 7000 years old. But the data does not support a conclusion. God tells us we do not know, and that is good enough for me.

Hi Gettingitright, the issue is that many young people in high school or college when faced with the fact many if not essentially all of their teachers believe the earth is way older than 7000 years, lose faith in the validity of the Bible. OECreationists are attempting to show that the Bible is accurate in all it says, using differing assumptions. The war between YEC and OEC simply pushes young folks away.

Yes ....... except for the witness of Scripture. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Our high schools, colleges and universities teach that God never existed, that Jesus is not substantiated by credible secular evidence, and..... the Christian church is disintegrating.

    How about "mox nix" (sp?)

In the end does it matter....probably not. But the gift of rational thought and curiosity to seek answers is uniquely human and I am glad that God made that a characteristic of our DNA.

I am a college math professor and I do NOT teach that God does not exist. I also have MANY colleagues which also do NOT teach that God does not exist. Even my more "liberal" colleagues do not do this. Be careful how broad of a brush you paint with.

I wouldn't put it at this age, but I would say that creation appears to be hundreds of millions of years old.

The problem, the real problem with the Young Earth Creationist position is that it seeks to both deny credible scientific data from a time that we know a good deal about (namely the earth 8,000 years ago) and obfuscates what good data is out there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a humanist scientistism proponent. Once you get into cosmology, the philosophy of origins, you are dealing with just that...philosophy. Science is, as a discipline, very helpful in dealing with observable matters. Cosmology is not observable and fraught with theories and speculation cast as proofs and concrete conclusions.

However, when one considers the actual observable data that is out there from multiple sources it is difficult (to downright nearly impossible) to postulate the earth and creation are only 8,000 years old. There's just too much that we know about that period.

So I tend to say this: Creation appears to be hundreds of millions of years old.

And I do add to this that I believe God creates with age built in.

I think what took place approximately 1981 years ago, the death and resurrection of the Son of God, was the faithfulness, the faith of God, in redeeming what had been sold under sin approximately 2000 years prior to 1981 years ago, to Satan the devil, who had been created millions of years prior to the selling under sin; Because Satan the devil, sinned and had previously brought death to a once pristine earth. About 6000 years ago God renewed the face of the earth in order to deal with the Satan the devil the author of sin and death through man created in his image, thus through his Son who would come in the image of the created man, created subject to the death of which the devil had the power thereof.

According to the word of God. Why not?

I've always tried to look at the creation story like this:

From an old earth perspective, if God had instructed Moses to write of the creation including information like DNA, cellular division, organic adaptation, etc, then the people he was writing to would have likely discarded the text as gibberish. It would mean nothing to them. The Day-Age ideology about creation doesn't bother me.

From a young earth perspective, the Bible seems to indicate literal 24-hour cycles. The young earth ideology doesn't bother me.

I'll say this about both: God's word describes creation in the first two chapters of the Bible, but then spends the remainder of the text detailing how we should act toward one another, and about where we are headed as humanity. It stands to reason, then, that our destination is far more important to us than our origin.

I am assuming that you do understand the science and mathematics behind the 13.7 billion year estimate for the age of the universe? You simply do not agree or think it is flawed?

Yes, that is what I hold as the main point of the creation accounts. It is to establish that God (YHWH) not other gods created all that we know, see and experience. The Hebrews were indeed surrounded ANE cultures with various and sundry creation epics and narratives. The Hebrews were repeatedly cautioned about mixing with these surrounding pagan cultures.
