Should we be following what Jesus did regarding sin?

You mean by preaching "except ye repent, ye perish". I would not say that is easy on sin

    I believe so.

Jesus came not to call the righteous but the sinners (Mark 2:17). He spent his time on earth with two distinct people groups. The World (the sinners as a whole) and those being called to salvation at that time (His disciples/followers). Jesus was in the eyes of many “soft” on sin when it came to dealing with sinners….reaching the sick, so to speak. But He was more confrontational with the “righteous” (those who claimed to be the people of God) and those who were His followers. We see Jesus showing compassion to the woman caught up in adultery, wrath towards the self-righteous Jewish leadership, and teaching His followers.

Likewise, the Church should have a focus on sin when it comes to the Body of Christ. But when it comes to the world, sin is dealt with in regards to the gospel message. Too often churches attempt to make the lost act like saved people by focusing on the sins rather than sinfulness and a need for the Savior. In America, too many churches are lost to the notion of bringing about morality in a declining nation. They place America over Christ and morality over the gospel. I do not believe that we are to ignore sin at all, but when we preach to the world anything but the gospel of Jesus Christ, we are wrong.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever reorders their life to follow Him, shall not die, but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, instead He sent His Son so that the world could be saved through Him." - paraphrase of John 3:16-17

If your ministry is to condemn the world, don't expect Jesus to take part in it.
