Charles Krauthammer is advocating raising the federal gas tax by $1 a gallon coupled with an equivalent reduction in the FICA tax.

BTW, I filled up at $1.89 a gallon yesterday.

 

Yep, GOP, raise taxes on items that the poor and middle class need to exist, but keep income taxes low for rich folk.

 

Crabtownboy, my wife, against my best advice, threw herself at the Obamacare debacle. Now her rates just went up 300%. She is in tears. There's no way we can afford it.

Tell us how much the democrats care for the poor, again ? (Poor. We grossed, together, about 13 grand, last year.)

Back to the O/P, I liked Krauthammer's idea. The give and take, but democrats will never vote to decrease any tax.

But I see one guy, not the GOP. The O/P is kinda misleading.

I wasn't aware that rich people no longer needed gas. I need to get rich. I'd save a ton of money on fuel!

 

It is intriguing. I presume his proposal would keep the employer's FICA rate the same and only reduce the employee's contribution rate. There is recent precedence for this as Obama cut the employees FICA rate from 6.2% to 4.2% for a couple of years.

What could the purpose be for wanting to raise the gasoline tax at a time when folks are finally getting a break at the gas tank and leaving themselves with a little extra cash?

 

this is a terrible idea, and if Congress thinks this tax increase will go unnoticed, they are wrong. This proposal is a dramatic increase and they say they are trying to replenish some highway fund they are mismanaging.

It's a strike (increase) while the iron (gas prices) is hot (relatively lower). But a regressive tax is a regressive tax.

 

To rebuild infrastructure--bridges, interstates, etc.

If it were to be offset by a decrease in the FICA tax (or some other tax) it would put money back in the consumers pocket and give them a bit of control over the amount of gasoline they need to buy. In other words, if you were to get $15 a week back from some tax reduction but were spending $15 a week more on gasoline due to taxes, you might opt to get a more fuel efficient car, plan trips more efficiently or drive less.

 

Don't know much about Corker, but my impression of him right now is that he is an idiot, a fool ...or worse.
