Labels do mean something as ones exegesis usually flows out of the type of Baptist someones is. It wold be great if everyone was a Berean (Acts 17) and examined the scriptures and tested their pastors and other leaders by it, but people like this are unfortunately very rare.

    See my siggie.

Too bad you can't pick more than one (which is an option when you make a pole, evan). For example, I'm a reformed baptist but also sbc.

Evan - it might not hurt to provide a brief descriptor, or a link to some sort of description, of what each type of Baptist is. For example, I've heard the term in passing, but I'm not familiar with the official definition of an "American" Baptist.

    Thanks, Deacon.

I would be in the "other" group, as well. My church lists itself only as a Baptist Church, but we're in the area of Independent and Missionary. While we tend toward Free Will, we do not associate ourselves with Free Will Baptists, as we also hold to true eternal security in salvation. I guess we're kind of a hodge-podge of doctrines.

SBC vary greatly. Some are Calvinist most are not. Tell me what type of Reformed? I once attended a church that leaned towards the 5 points but taught Dispensational eschatology so that was a Calvinistic baptist church.

If there are any American Baptists on this board I won't welcome them. Yes indeed they are very liberal and most in my area attend churches that do not preach the gospel but have a social Jesus. That's another gospel.

As a Southern Baptist - we ARE independent Baptists - as are all Baptists!

And there are many conservative American Baptists as well.

Really? Not in my area. One church in particular in Denver (a rather large one) does not preach the gospel and was offended with my John Piper gospel tract because the words sin and Hell were used. Looking at their site it's all social and the church would be against evangelism. That's another gospel.

I know. You and me agree on most doctrine except eschatology.

Prior to "our" awareness of Baptist I was a sinner lost and on my way to hell. My neighbor was Missionary Baptist Pastor who lead me to the Lord. Twenty two years later he took a .38 to his head.

    Over the years we have belonged to several I,FBC's;

Belonged to a Southern Baptist church for which we witnessed hand to hand combat at every business meeting. Once a month it was. Boy, talk about a drag! The worst part was we had to buy our own helmets.

Attended a Baptist Church where the Pastor wrote two sets of By-Laws..., and after surrendering all the copies the second set emerged about a year later with said pastor basically owning the property.

I belonged to a FWB Church for a while but never specifically fit in. Do you suppose it was all about not asking to be saved twice a month?

We visited the First Self-Righteous Baptist Church once..., here in Jacksonville but never went back.

Fifty miles from our home there's the First Free Will Holiness Baptist Church but I don't think I'd fit in with them either not to mention it's too far to drive.

Currently, we belong to a Baptist Church unaffiliated with any organization. Our Pastor is very good having been in the pulpit for the past 40 years. He takes the time to explain things, the various theories, etc., which is extremely helpful considering I never graduated from Yale.

...so, in answer to your question..., What kind of Baptist am I, I'm a born again Believer that attends a Baptist Church. Yes, we have a small clique but so far they appear to be quite dormant.

I also consider myself a "good" Baptist in that I sin daily; I become angry with all the world's nonsense quite often; I am pro-life; consider myself a patriot; own a gun or two; and..., if..., now I might confess a bit..., I, uh, er uh..., probably look twice at a filled in bikini.

I am the type of Baptist absent an agenda and just as pleased as punch the Lord smiled down on me and called me to Himself. Otherwise, I'd be a Baptist on my way to hell.

In the meantime..., thank you. I needed this.

YES - REALLY- Granted they (conservatives in the ABC) may not be the majority - but on the other hand there are Baptists in conservative groups (including the SBC) - that are liberal.

My husband and I always joke that we are Bad Baptist, since we dance, and don't think a glass of wine is an unforgivable sin. And then I also joke that I'm worse because not only am I a Bad Baptist, I'm a bad IF Baptist. I had gone to a IFB church for 8 years prior to meeting my husband, and he went to an SBC. Now we both go to an SBC and our quite happy there, despite being Bad Baptist.

I was Conservative Baptist (fundamental group that split from Northern/American Baptists over liberalism). Shifted totally independent non-affiliated Baptist as Conservatives were more new-evangelical and inclusive of a broad "Christian" position.

Presently our church is loosely classified as Particular Baptist/Reformed Baptist but non-covenantal. We fellowship also with the Founders Movement in the SBC (trying to turn the SBC back to the Calvinistic theology of the founders).

Though our present church is called "Sovereign Grace" by name, it is not linked to the Sovereign Grace church movement (the old People of Destiny charismatic reformed types founded by charismatic catholics! - can you imagine?)
