Could some of you tell me the prevalence in the SBC of this position:

Free grace in the vein of Zane Hodges, etc, or Ryrie, etc, but not dispensational? Amil like Herschel Hobbs?

Historically I would say that was the default position. Most of the people involved in some type of leadership position would have been found in this general category. Things have now changed

There was the rise of dispensationalism which saw many, particularly in the pew, change their eschatological position. Dispensationalism has had a large reach beyond just the SBC, but I would say that it is beginning to wane, though still popular. The reaction (there is always a reaction) which I would say is more along the lines of Historic Premillennialism, which is what I would consider to be the prevailing view of majority of SBC leadership.

The thing to keep in mind is that SBC leadership and SBC pew are two very different things. It isn't that unusual to experience one thing in the local church and to hear something else from the leadership.

Thanks--yes, pew and leadership sometimes seem miles apart in the SBC!

Our church is mostly people who came here from Texas. Most in the pew grew up, I think from what they say in SS, free grace/amil. Most were thoroughly taught dispensationalism from the pulpit.

Many are now Calvinist, LS, and dispy as to endtimes.

But some are moving back to the simple free grace/amil position.

Just wondering how common this is.

Also I've been reading some of those "forgotten books" reprints from some of the leadership of the past, and find a lot I would say are or very close to free grace/amil.

Just my 2 cents, as my church is not part of the SBC, but we've always been free grace and amil. This actually goes for the two independent baptist churches I've been a member of.

It is probably pretty common from liberals coming out of the BGCT but it is not representative of the rest of the convention.

    Oh wow--seriously ?

The writers I refer to, and the people I know, are just about as far as you can get from "liberals."

They tend to believe every word of the Bible, just as written, no less and NO MORE.

So unless you are premil dispy you are a liberal?:BangHead: Or is it Calvinist dispy now?

    Hardly.

Most of the folks I'm referencing wouldn't be allowed to sit at a table with "moderates" because they are way too fundamentalist.

Good call referencing W.A. Criswell, who started out supporting abortion.

Most of the Baptists in my neck of the piney woods are free will and dispensational!

Yes, liberal has everything to do with soteriology and eschatology. At least that is what some would have you think.

Criswell, like everyone else, evolved in his theological thinking. Reflected in his denomination of choice which has a long history of evolving theologically.
