Anyone else have rampant flu in your area?

    I went to the clinic yesterday and I have type A flu.

    It's rampant at our school even though we are Lysoling everything twice a day. I was hoping I wouldn't get it, but alas.

    I had the flu shot in last fall. Anyone else have the flu shot and STILL got the flu. Has it hit you area?

    My girlfriend is a nurse at the local hospital. She said that the flu is so rampant that if anyone comes in with so much as a single possible flu symptom, they are being treated for it, just for prevention.

    I've heard stories of Tamiflu shortages all over Georgia, as we've been hit hard by the flu. I had it a couple years ago, and it was terrible. I got the flu shot this season, but then I heard that, for whatever reason, the flu shot produced for the 2014-15 flu season is somewhere around 20% effective at preventing flu.

    People need to watch those symptoms. I didn't.

    Last Thursday and Friday, about 15 of my 76 4th graders had tested positive for flu. Last weekend I couldn't even take my coat off in Sunday School or in the gym at dinner on the grounds. Even with my coat on, I was freezing.

    It hurt my fingers to play the piano - I was that cold.

    And this week we've had 26 of our 76 4th graders to have the flu. It's hit our school hard. I have felt bad, coughed, hurt all over, can't sleep, and had sore throat.

    Yesterday I finally decided to push aside the denial and go to the doctor. I tested positive right away.

    Anyway, today I've got to Lysol my house and I feel like I need to wash my pillowcases and sheets every day until this is over. Problem is, I don't feel like it.

    My mother wants to come over and de-virus my house, but I told her absolutely not.

    The doctor said I should be good Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

    Don't ignore the symptoms people. This is no fun.

    It is rampant here too and my son had it last week (confirmed A flu). Fortunately, our proactive actions kept the rest of us from getting it. 3 of us got the flu shot, 3 didn't and it was one who didn't who got it. Last year I did get the flu despite the vaccination but that was the first time in 25 years that I got it despite the vaccine.

    I've just been reiterating to my family to wash their hands constantly, use hand sanitizer and to NEVER touch their face unless their hands are freshly washed. It has seemed to help.

    We had our flu shots last Autumn and so far we are fine.

    I totally agree about the hand-washing. Last year picked up the Noro virus bug and it is not nice. Now I keep a pack of antiseptic wipes in my bag to use when we are out. If I have to use a rest room I make sure I wipe door handles because there are still some disgusting people out there who don't wash their hands after using the facilities!

    Rampant is an interesting notion--it keeps the CDC and Bayer in business.

    A 20% effectiveness rating would get most people fired. Where is my Tamiflu? Or: hit the viruses with some more antibiotics which are totally ineffective.

    Our immune systems work quite well--if we keep them healthy.

    Have not had a full blown virus attack in years--without vaccine. I still remember the swine flu fiasco. We killed a lot of folk with that one.

    "We" didn't kill anyone but over 12,000 people died of the swine flu from 2009-2011.

    The flu vaccine, from what I understand, is devised off the most recent strain of flu. If the next year's flu changes in any way, it can really hamper the effectiveness of the flu shot. The flu does not remain static, unfortunately.

    Here is the info on how the vaccine is decided.

    Each year the vaccine is changed and it is decided by looking at what flu is going around, usually in the other hemisphere, and then deciding which virus strain is most likely going to cause illness in the US and then a vaccine is created based on that information. It takes months to create the vaccine so even if we suddenly know that it's a different strain, there is not enough time to create a new vaccine for that year's flu season. The US vaccine is not based on the influenza strain that went through the US last year. Each year it is usually different.

    Yep. I didn't go to the doctor for it, but almost did for not being able to get/retain fluids. Seven people here died from it the same week, so I can't complain. The fever was higher than I've had for a long time. That caught me off guard.
