Godless Parents Are Doing a Better Job [LINK]
    By Tracy Moore

Hate to break it to you, Bible thumpers: Parents who raise their kids without religion are doing just fine, studies say, possibly even better. Overall, not believing in God seems to make people and their offspring more tolerant. Less racist. Less sexist. Enviro-friendly.[SNIP]

In an op-ed at the Los Angeles Times by sociologist Phil Zuckerman, you can read about a swath of studies that support what everyone who is "between churches" has known forever: Not believing in God isn't synonymous with being amoral. If anything, it can give you a greater clarity about right and wrong, because you're more likely to base it on empathy and decency than a guaranteed spot upstairs come Judgment Day. [SNIP]

I just grew up in the over-saturated South, and for every truly genuine, kind, accepting person who drew on strength from God to do good in this world (I almost exclusively grew up with Baptists and Church of Christ nutjobs) that I ever met, there were easily a hundred who used it as a shield to judge and shun everything that didn't look like them, which was usually a white guy in a button-down oxford, Dockers, and a piece of UT football insignia somewhere. Who got s###faced on the weekends. And was a racist. But who was somehow, inexplicably, considered a "good person" from a "good family." [SNIP]

You don't need God to be good. He and his colleagues have found, time and time again, "sustaining moral values," and "enriching ethical precepts" among those who dare not to pledge allegiance to the Big Kahuna: Chief among those: rational problem solving, personal autonomy, independence of thought, avoidance of corporal punishment, a spirit of "questioning everything" and, far above all, empathy.

I remember reading a while back on how Pravda reported on Christian parents in Communist Russia.

In other words, their measuring stick is political correctness.

"If anything, it can give you a greater clarity about right and wrong, because you're more likely to base it on empathy and decency than a guaranteed spot upstairs come Judgment Day."

And this shows the difference between church people and Christianity. There is no guaranteed spot upstairs come Judgment Day based on how we act but because of the blood of Jesus Christ. Understanding the Gospel gives us an even greater empathy and decency than the world does. When there is no God, when we are here by chance, driven by genetic mutations and survival of the fittest, we have no motivation to be good to others. But when we know just how great sinners we are and what a great Savior we have, the world changes.

Deacon..., I have to admit that when it comes to this forum..., I poke fun at almost everyone. The reason being I suppose, is that way too many people literally take themselves to seriously. Those self-righteous souls who consider themselves God's right hand man really turn me off and I lose all respect for them. Professing to wise they become fools in their own right.

We raised three children, four grand children and now, a great grand child (5 years old) that all have attended Christian Schools. The sorry lowdown, childish, immoral and down right gut wrenching cheap politics within most so-called Christian Establishments is absolutely astounding and does more harm than good to those who fall under the agenda driven umbrella of complete fools.

Could I run a Christian School or Pastor a church? No. Even if I tried it would be a complete disaster so I'm not trying to present a picture of how great I am.

Out of the three children and the four grand children mentioned above, only ONE of them decided on College and of all things.., received a Teaching Degree. To be a teacher now-a-days you have to buy your own bullet proof vest. A bummer for sure and those things aren't cheap.

The mother of the great grand child now has three children from three different fathers. Her mother came home with four kids 22 years ago. My son has been married twice. What a stinking mess.

Misery abounds. Even for those Godless Parents.

Being a parent today, is a rough job, secular or Christian. And to be honest, I wouldn't want to be a parent or a child today. But to approach this without Jesus is like facing eminent death without Jesus!

    Great post my brother.

Christian schools aren't there to raise your children for you. You always want to blame the schools for all your kid's problems. You need to look elsewhere.

I believe the article is targeted against "Fundamentalist Christianity" with their separatist, elitist distinctive.

Sadly there's some hatefulness, racism, and bigotry clearly evident among those that do not consider themselves "fundamentalist", even within threads here on the BaptistBoard, so that I can't disagree with the article.

Truly a simple belief in our Lord is one aspect of Christianity but it is a growing and fruitful relationship, developed in a Spirit-guided walk that develops the characteristics that the article attributes to those unreached by the gospel of Christ.

    It's unsettling!

rd2..., there's too many distractions out there for kids and not enough responsibility assigned.

My father was a youth during the Great Depression. He told me once that if there was any "meat" on the table it was because he went out and shot it. He entered the Marine Corps, survived WW II and Korea to retire in 1961. As a teenager I had some heavy duty responsibilities assigned to me but now-a-days, it's one big party and if you try to "force a child" it's considered abuse.

In April I'll be 70 and looking forward to it. Too old fashioned and don't fit in anymore. I'm now looking for that "Flight Final" into eternity.

The problem with the op is that it is based on the worlds standard of what is good and bad not God's. Anyone who gives the article in the op and credibility is blind.

Kinda of funny regarding those of world perceiving "church people" thinking they are sinless and all and that of true Christianity because during last week I've been showing a tremendous amount of "empathy" toward a new believer who has been expressing they do not feel worthy of God's grace in forgiveness. The discussion has focused on that none are righteous and the need for the blood of Jesus Christ. Me thinks the sociologist is unwittingly showing his ignorance of the Gospel with such statements. My best defense has been my empathy being that when I was a new believer I felt as unworthy as they come and that I'm still far from perfect.:saint:
