    Many national church meetings have declared Arminianism as heresy.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synod_of_Dort

    Why is it that today most Pastors are comfortable with Arminianism??

    The Synod concluded with a rejection of the Arminian views, and set forth the Reformed doctrine on each point, namely: total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement (arguing that Christ's atoning work was intended only for the elect and not for the rest of the world), irresistible (or irrevocable) grace, and the perseverance of the saints. These are sometimes referred to as the Five points of Calvinism. The Decision of the Synod of Dort on the Five Main Points of Doctrine in Dispute in the Netherlands, popularly known as the Canons of Dort, is the explanation of the judicial decision of the Synod.[12] In the original preface, the Decision is called:

    The Synod condemned the religious doctrine of Arminianism as heresy. There followed the political condemnation of the statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt who had been the protector of the Remonstrants. For the crime of general perturbation in the state of the nation, both in Church and State (treason), he was beheaded on 13 May 1619, only four days after the final meeting of the Synod. As consequence of the Arminian defeat the jurist Hugo Grotius was given a life sentence in prison; but he escaped with the help of his wife. Both Van Oldenbarnevelt and Grotius had in fact been imprisoned since 29 August 1618.

    I'm beginning to wonder if the only way he can feel good about his chosen theological bend is to tear down all others...then again, I'm just an idol-worshiping free-willer. :smilewinkgrin:

    Reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Futurama: "Don't kill my friends! They're not evil! They're just jerks."

    Arminianism isn't heresy. It's just wrong.

    And the Arminians here aren't evil. they're just jerks.

    The Arminians on that cesspool, Onlinebaptist.com, on the other hand, they're among the nastiest people I've ever encountered.

    Who cares what the synod condemns. And by the way this post only supports my claim made in another thread that you are here to evangelize those who are not calvinist. Thanks for making my point.

    Now, Rev, you know that Robert has claimed quite clearly that he is not a Calvinist. Never mind that his doctrine is quite clearly Calvinistis and he only targets those who are not Calvinist, the man is clearly not a Calvinist himself. :smilewinkgrin:

    Just another example of a Calvinist changing the plain meanings of words, i.e.

    Whosoever = the elect
    Kosmos = the elect
    The World = the elect
    Everyone = the elect
    Draw all men = regenerate the elect

    I find it "interesting" that Oldenbarnevelt was beheaded for being the "heretic".

    Tony, there is heresy and then there is Heresy. Small "h" heresy is anything that is a false teaching. Not all false teachings rise to the same level. When it comes to discussing the doctrine of salvation (soteriology) it is the same thing. The are small "a" Arminians and big "A" Arminians. Most mainline baptists are of the small "a" variety. They would never say God is not sovereign in salvation or that man cooperates with God in the same. But there are those who are bold enough to say exactly that. They would say that man does cooperate with God in salvation and unashamedly teach it. That type of Arminianism is dangerously close to damnable heresy (Galatians 1).

    Most baptists define themselves in reference to Calvin. 2, 3, 4 point. Etc...

    I would say the point that baptists hesitate concerning Arminianism is eternal security.

    Almost every baptist in my neck of the woods shuns Calvinism. We don't embrace Arminianism, but we definitely are not Calvinist. We, by and large, believe in eternal security upon salvation (once saved, always saved) and we hold mostly to a synergistic view of man having to accept or reject the offer from God made through His preached word.

    We do not believe, as Bro. Willis said the other day, that the gifts of God (salvation, in this case) are irresistible. Personally, I see too many scriptures wherein God the Son tells man to do something, but He conditions the statement to reflect man having to choose to do so.

    I am a member of a church that embraces the 1689 London Baptist Confession, hence Calvinistic doctrine. I love the doctrine because it places God in His infinite Majestic attributes where He is and places man who is wretched and sinful where he is. I believe in all 5 points of Calvinistic doctrine

    I am not a Calvinist, or if I am, I am a one point (eternal security) Calvinist. I believe God is sovereign, but define it as God either causing or allowing whatsoever comes to pass. Others believe God predestines whatsoever comes to pass but mysteriously is not the author of the sin He predestines.

    Calvinists claim God unconditionally chose individuals for salvation. But 2 Thessalonians 2:13 says God chooses individuals for salvation through faith in the truth, hence a conditional election.

    Calvinists claim Christ died only for the elect. But scripture teaches Christ died not only for the church, but also laid down His life as a ransom for all. Christ being the propitiation for the whole world.

    Any time doctrine is asserted using compulsion rather the persuasion, it reeks of perversion. We should not spend effort branding one another as heretics, but reason together in our search for truth. Censorship is not a friend of truth, let alone practice of killing the infidels.
