Jesus said - "it is finished"
Does that mean that at the end of the crucifixion, that the penalty of sin was paid.

Another words, if Jesus had not risen from the dead, would our salvation still be secure.

(I understand there were prophecies of his resurrection - so keep that is not the question for now)

I would suggest that the agony of the Cross was something Christ was both ready and anxious to accomplish.

    This...

    Matthew 26:39

    King James Version (KJV)

39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

...is often viewed by many as the Lord asking for a different way, but if we look at Christ's many statements concerning the cup He would partake of we see that several times He makes it clear this is precisely what He came for.

    For example:

    Matthew 20:22

    King James Version (KJV)

22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

    John 18:11

    King James Version (KJV)

11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Does the Lord both verify what He came for as well as ask for another way? I don't think so, but rather, in view is the Lord asking for the Cross to take place and be over.

When He states "It is finished," it is in direct response, I believe, to His request "to get it done," so to speak.

    Mark 14:36

    King James Version (KJV)

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

    Matthew 26:42

    King James Version (KJV)

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

I would suggest that we do not see the Lord in conflict over the very Work He came to do, that He Himself would ask for a different way when the fact is He came for this purpose...

    John 12:26-28

    King James Version (KJV)

26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

...and here we see the exact opposite intent of His words, which, if we take a view the Lord asked for a different means to provide salvation other than the Cross, the above here is a discrepancy.

This makes it clear, in my view, that He was not asking for a different means of providing salvation, because He acknowledges this would be an erroneous request.

Which causes me to take the view that the Lord was instead saying, and no disrespect intended (because I think it makes the point)..."Father, let's get it done. Let this be the time."

And when it was accomplished, He states...it is finished. It has a central focus on the Cross and does not preclude everything else He would accomplish, such as the Resurrection and sending the Comforter.

    God bless.

Not until after the Resurrection, was it finished.

If it wasn't finished for three more days, then why say "It is finished?"

I think Jesus was indicating that the sacrifice of the Lamb of God was finished, a once and for all time sin offering. His resurrection does not add to His finished word, it demonstrates God accepted His sacrifice, thus proving through Christ, and Christ alone, our sin can be taken away.

By understanding what you wrote is like saying the Resurrection and even the Death itself wasn't necessary. (Note: Calvinists technically deny the sufficiency of the Cross, they just don't realize it.) Given this, there needs to be a more careful approach to the text. More is necessary to appreciate this text.

Yes, it was finished on the cross. The resurrection simply DECLARED it so. That is why the scriptures say he was "raised for our JUSTIFICATION"

Salavtion itself was fully accomplished by his death on the cross, which also meant that the father HAD and WOULD raise Him up by the Spirit, as He died in our stad and paid the sin debt for us in full!

Yes, he acoomplished the transaction between the father and Himself for our sins at that time on the Cros, and that meant the resurrection had to happen!
