Greater or less evil

Talking in Life Group Sunday, we were talking about forming our world views from the Bible. We concluded that Christians should not condone gay marriages and agreed that it would be better for children not be raised in a home of that nature. But then some decided that they believed that being raised by two gay people is better than being raised in a crack house. So my question is, is one bad place "better" than the other? Is one evil more or less evil than another?
In what home would a child the most hope in?

My question is why is it necessary to make the comparison between a straight home, a gay home, or a crack house? Who would allow for a child to be raised in a crack house? Why such an extreme comparison?

The comparison was made between a gay home and a crack house and I'm pretty sure no one other than a crack addict with kids would want children raised in a crack house. Someone in class said that they couldn't help but think being raised in a gay home would not be as bad as living in a crack house. So my question is, is one bad place "better" than the other?

What if in the crack house there were loving parents who worked hard to protect the child? I don't think we can say "Well, it's better than…." when the bottom line is that God calls homosexuality "sin".

The whole comparison is overly simplistic, but I would say that generally the damage done to a child when missing a parent of either gender (not just "gay marriage"--which is not marriage--but divorce, etc.) is potentially worse than the admittedly great harm that can come to a child in a crack house.

The crack house scenario is ambiguous. There is not enough to go on. (1) Are both parents in the crack house? (2) Are both parents addicted? (3) Are the addicted parents getting help for their addiction? (3) Are the addicted parents selling, with the possibility of arrest and imprisonment?

You see, a simple comparison (Which is worse?) doesn't begin to approach the complexity of the issues involved.

I would agree with John in large part and view this kind of speculation as possibly making excuse for sin. As students I don't think it is our duty to create a variance in regards to sin, but to concentrate on what sin is and our objection to it.

We can find examples to justify such reasoning, such as prosperous children of bad home environments, as well as children who suffered from those environments. Some growing up in bad homes will become good parents because they reviled their own upbringing. Some will fall into the same sin.

When it comes to a functional family life, the Biblical worldview teaches that which we should understand and incorporate into our own involvement in family.

And here's the kicker: even when that is done that does not guarantee success. That is due to man's nature, which instills rebellion in the hearts of men, even as children.

So the bottom line might be teach that which is good and make no excuse for sin. If it is sin, it should be declared as such. Many engaged in those sin seek to support their lifestyles by drawing contrasts such as these. A gay "couple" might point out their lifestyle is better than that of the drunkards, and in certain cases, practically, we might be forced to agree. But that does not justify their lifestyle, nor establish a basis for it. No more than being raised by adoptive parents of the same race being said to be better than being raised by a different race is better practically establishes being raised by adoptive parents is better than being raised by one's true parents. Or, saying being raised by adoptive parents of a different race who don't beat their children is better than being raised by adoptive parents of the same race who do...is better than being raised by one's true parents.

    God bless.

Great Question! Yes, some situations of earth have worse consequences. Recall that Jesus taught of the peril of leading "little ones" astray. Often, on earth, we must choose from among what we see are available options, both flawed to a degree.

But let me turn to another truth, that Satan uses "enabling scenarios" to justify ungodly action. Thus they use an exception to break a general rule. But the fact is most often we are not faced with these "justify bad choices" circumstances.

Jesus taught we should do right, even in the "little" things. The ends do not justify the means. It is never right to do wrong in order to get a chance to do right.

Now to return to the theological issue, the consequence of sin, or doing something not in the will of God. As scripture teaches if we break even one point of the Law, we have broken the whole Law. We are lawbreakers, and the consequence is eternal separation from our holy God. So here we have various sins, resulting in one punishment. Thus from this perspective, all evil is the same in that it results in one uniform punishment. But wait, there is more.

Our various sins receive specific punishment, with some punishment being "more tolerable" than other punishment. See Matthew 10:15 and 11:22.

In summary, there are two consequences or punishments by God for sin, one (separation = eternal punishment in eternal darkness) and two (appropriate torment for our individual misdeeds) and thus some punishment is "more tolerable" than other punishment.

Well you know what? It is a bad comparison intended to excuse a behavior.

Where does the Christian stand? Is right ever wrong? Is wrong ever right?

Yeah hath God said!... Does the scripture really say that? Surely a God of Love would never do that?... Those scriptures are there for our PROTECTION!... Change the scripture and the meaning of it and the PROTECTION OF GOD IS GONE!... Check the O/T!... As soon as Israel left God, and started serving other Gods... God left them to their own devises.

Now to bring this thought to earth... My granddaughter 14 is living with her mother, who is with another woman... I do not condone this and I told her so... She was raised in the church and should no better. God will deal with the situation not me... I put her in his hands... That is tough love!... How he deals with her I don't know but I know in my heart and soul he will. In his time not mine... Nobody hurries God!... Some have to hit rock bottom and only then do they look up!... Only then can they SURRENDER ALL and let the Father show his child his work!... Brother Glen

I'm an overly simplistic guy. Probably too much so. I'd have to respond with, "that's like saying 'which end of the cess pool is better than the other?'"
