    The word for "rest" in Hebrews 4:9, is:

    Sabbatis-mos [literally: Sabbath - keeping] is a specialized word [from Sabbatizo, verb - Exodus 16:30; Leviticus 23:32, 26:34; 2 Chronicles 36:21, see also the LXX in all its uses; like as is the word Baptis-mos [G909], utilized [Mark 7:9, etc "βαπτισμους", literally thoroughly or totally washing] from Baptizo].

    ...in the extant Greek literature, always, in every single case, means a literally keeping of the Sabbath Day:

    These are merely additional helps to what is already given in Scripture itself, but let us dwell here and see what may be gleaned, and come back:

    Neither Christ Jesus, nor Paul, etc, anywhere give 'rest' from the keeping of the Ten Commandments, the Moral/Spiritual, Holy, Just and Good and Perfect Law of God, which would include the 7th Day Sabbath of the Lord thy God.

    If these [the Ten Commandments] are not kept by the powerful grace of God, then we shall never enter into Heaven, for nothing defiling shall enter there, and Lucifer was cast out from there for his transgressions, even as Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden on earth for theirs...

    Let's just look at the overall, then get into the details:

    Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. - Hebrews 4:1

    For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it]. - Hebrews 4:2

    For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. - Hebrews 4:3

    For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. - Hebrews 4:4

    And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. - Hebrews 4:5

    Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: - Hebrews 4:6

    Hebrews is built from the foundation of Chapter 1, in basic, which builds with "wherefore" and "therefore", the stepping stones of Hebrews:

    Hebrews 1 - Jesus is God, Eternal Deity, Creator of all creation, and above all fellow messengers/angels.

    Hebrews 2 - Jesus is man, He who came in the likeness of sinful [fallen] flesh, as we have, the seed of Abraham, not in the nature/flesh of unfallen angels of Heaven.

    Hebrews 3 - Israel, & the peoples of then/old.

    Hebrews 4 - Israel, & the peoples of now.​

    etc, etc.

    Beginning in Hebrews 4:1, again we read:

    Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left [us] of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. - Hebrews 4:1

    The "therefore" is referencing all that which is given in the previous chapters, especially Hebrews Chapter 3, in the failure of Israel after the flesh to obtain the promises and of entering into "his [God's] rest". Why so? It was because:

    For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard [it]. - Hebrews 4:2

    We, see that they of old/then, could not enter in because of doubt, "unbelief" [vs 6], not "being mixed with faith".

    However, please notice, what they did not believe then of old time:

    "For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them ..."​

    They did not believe the gospel, and so because of their unbelief, they could not enter in... and because of their unbelief, they broke God's commandments.

    Paul is drawing from numerous OT texts to show that in Christ Jesus we may have rest from "sin" [1 John 3:4; which is transgression of His Law, the Ten Commandments].

    To continue in sin, is to transgress any one of the Ten Commandments and is not to have rest, but to have bondage.

    It is a remaining in slavery/bondage in Egypt, rather than freedom in the promised land of Canaan.

    In Egypt they were not allowed to rest [Sabbath, the 7th Day], as by Pharoah's and the Scriptures own words [Exodus 5,15,16,20 etc].

    One such text we have here:

    For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. Hebrews 4:4

    Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. Genesis 2:1

    And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. Genesis 2:2

    And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Genesis 2:3

    For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:11

    It [is] a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. Exodus 31:17

    How did God rest?, What were His works?

    Hebrews 4:5 speaks of God's rest, even as it is written, "...my rest." It is this rest we are to enter into.

    And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. Hebrews 4:5

    Paul picks up Psalms 95, speaking of Israel [the peoples] experience in the wilderness, wherein they failed because of lack of faith in the Gospel preached unto them ["...they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:" Hebrews 4:6] that God would deliver then, bring them into the goodly land and cause them to keep the commandments of God, including the fourth, the 7th Day Sabbath, and because of failure to believe this promise of God [which is the New/Everlasting Covenant, even righteousness by faith], that whole adult generation [except two, Joshua [type of Christ] and Caleb [faithful remnant]] perished in the wilderness, even as it is written in Ezekiel 20:12,13,16,20,21,24... "...cause them to know the abominations of their fathers:" [Ezekiel 20:4] and "In the day [that] I lifted up mine hand unto them, to bring them forth of the land of Egypt into a land that I had espied for them, flowing with milk and honey, which [is] the glory of all lands:" [Ezekiel 20:6] and "...But they rebelled against me, and would not hearken unto me:..." [Ezekiel 20:8] and "But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness..." [Ezekiel 20:13], and so in what ways did Israel rebel? What was one of the primary reasons listed over and over again in Ezekiel 20? Again, "Notwithstanding the children rebelled against me..." [Ezekiel 20:21], but how so, what is specifically listed in the very same verse?

    The Holy 7th Day Sabbath of the LORD thy God.

    Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 20:36

    Psalms 95 itself is the 7th Day Sabbath of the Lord thy God Psalm, speaking of both the Creator [God rested the 7th Day] and Saviour [Jesus rested the 7th Day], notice its language:

    O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Psalms 95:1

    Who is that Rock, and where was it?

    It was in the wilderness with them, and that Rock was Christ ["And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ." 1 Corinthians 10:4].

    Notice that word "salvation" in the first verse, and we see parallels to it in Exodus 20:2.

    Now please notice the Creator part of the Psalms 95, which hearken right back unto Genesis 2:2-3, Exodus 20:8-11, Exodus 31:17, etc

    "For the LORD [is] a great God, and a great King above all gods." [Psalms 95:3]

    "In his hand [are] the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills [is] his also." [Psalms 95:4]

    "The sea [is] his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry [land]." [Psalms 95:5]

    "O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker." [Psalms 95:6]​

    This language is speaking of the very same things we find in Exodus 20:11, wherein it is written:

    For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:11

    And again in Revelation 14:7, amidst the Everlasting Gospel [Revelation 14:6], "Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters." [Revelation 14:7], again see the same in "And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:" [Revelation 10:6], which is directly quoting from Nehemiah: "Thou, [even] thou, [art] LORD alone; thou hast made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth, and all [things] that [are] therein, the seas, and all that [is] therein, and thou preservest them all; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee." [Nehemiah 9:6], and both Peter and Paul, call every man, Jew/Gentile back unto God in repentance, to the Creator God of the Sabbath, the 7th Day, in Acts 4:24 and Acts 14:15 [both passages which are directly citing Genesis 2:2-3, Exodus 20:11, etc].

    For Psalms 95 continues, for why Israel did not enter...

    "For he [is] our God; and we [are] the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice," [Psalms 95:7]

    "Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, [and] as [in] the day of temptation in the wilderness:" [Psalms 95:8]

    "When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work." [Psalms 95:9]

    "Forty years long was I grieved with [this] generation, and said, It [is] a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:" [Psalms 95:10]

    "Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest." [Psalms 95:11]​

    ... for 40 long years God was grieved with that generation, and as we have seen in Ezekiel 20:12,13,16,20,21,24, we have seen why.

    In Numbers we even see a specific example of what Ezekiel mentions:

    "And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day." [Numbers 15:32]​

    What was the judgment? By example, ensample, the wages for sin was?

    "Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity [shall be] upon him." [Numbers 15:31]​

    Again, as it is written in Nehemiah:

    "But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments," [Nehemiah 9:16]

    "And refused to obey, neither were mindful of thy wonders that thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion..." [Nehemiah 9:17]​

    ...and even when the children entered in, they did not continue...

    "Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against thee, and cast thy law behind their backs, and slew thy prophets which testified against them to turn them to thee, and they wrought great provocations." [Nehemiah 9:26],​

    and Nehemiah continues in the judgments and respites of Israel. Never truly having rest.

    They too had the 7th Day, knowing of it, but never really entering into it, and so it did not profit them, because they lacked faith.

    Hebrews 4:8 Jesus through Joshua [Oshea, the son of Nun] was to lead them into the promised land [Canaan], which was the type to Heaven, but they did not truly obtain the rest, seeing how they lacked faith in God to accomplish in them what was promised.

    Therefore the rest of God remains [the same rest, which they could have entered], we may also enter through the same Gospel, the Same Christ, and the same Day [the 7th Day Sabbath of the Lord thy God].

    For notice,

    There remaineth therefore a rest [sabbatismos, literal true sabbath-keeping] to the people of God. Hebrews 4:9

    "For he that is entered into his [God's] rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his." Hebrews 4:10

    How did God rest? and from what works?

    Notice, that it still doesn't even end there:

    "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." [Hebrews 4:11],​

    which Hebrews 3, Ezekiel 20, Nehemiah 9, Numbers 15; 1 Corinthians 10, all show why they of old failed when they had the same Gospel, the same Rock, the same Law [Ten Commandments] and the same 7th Day Sabbath of the Lord thy God, and the same Saviour and the same Creator, all with the same chance to believe by Biblical faith [that faith which works, bears fruit, etc].

    They did not believe in God's promises to grant them victory, not only over their enemies, but more importantly, over sin, and to give them the Land of Canaan by His Mercies:

    I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. - Exodus 20:2

    The Ten Commandments begin with Saving Grace...

    But we are not yet done with Hebrews 4, for we need to carefully look at "sworn in my wrath" [vs 3], and really compare it to:

    Yet also I lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given [them], flowing with milk and honey, which [is] the glory of all lands; - Ezekiel 20:15

    For when God "lifted up my hand unto them in the wilderness", it is the "sworn" oath of God/Jesus, when He raises His hand(s) in such oath/promise. What and why may be carefully examined in Ezekiel 20, and elsewhere.

    Then from there, there must of necessity be seen the plan of redemption, and how Christ Jesus death [before] and later the burial on the Sabbath, and how this Sign, proves that Jesus is the Author and Finisher of our Faith, being our Creator/Redeemer. It ought to break our hearts to transgress against His Law, to see the sufferings of Christ Jesus, His death, His pain, His sorrow, for our sin [1 John 3:4].

    Satan is the father of transgressors of God's Law, the Ten Commandments.

    Yet, for the righteous, they shall inherit the New Heavens & New Earth, as it is written:

    No, brother vooks, the idea is given in Scripture, that it shall be a "City" "coming down from God out of Heaven":

    And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. - Revelation 21:2

    But now they desire a better [country], that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. - Hebrews 11:16

    But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, - Hebrews 12:22

    But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. - Galatians 4:26

    The City of Heaven is clearly described in the Revelation of Jesus Christ, and elsewhere. It is a literal tangible City, since the saints will have a "place" [John 14:1-3] therein, as well as in the New Earth.

    Yes, God is indeed the Temple [never in question by myself, or to anyone capable of reading the texts], but so too His body, which will also live in country homes outside of the City, as in Isaiah, etc.

    Ezekiel's Temple, speaks of the God's People, His Church. It is God who builds it, beginning with the Foundation Stone - Christ Jesus:

    Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. - 1 Peter 2:5

    For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. - 1 Corinthians 3:11

    And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner [stone]; - Ephesians 2:20

    The final stones are almost ready, and then the end shall come.

    God's promises never fail.

    Again, see the true sacrifices here, based in the Lamb of God:


    But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned. - 1 Corinthians 2:14

    Notice, to those that cannot see these things, it is because there is a vail over their eyes, having rejected God's Law, the transcript of His Character, even as it in the face of Jesus Christ:

    But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which [vail] is done away in Christ. - 2 Corinthians 3:14

    But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. - 2 Corinthians 3:15

    Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. - 2 Corinthians 3:16

    The Pharisees/Sadducees etc of old rejected Jesus Christ, while claiming to keep the Ten Commandments of God, but nullified them through their man-made traditions.

    The Pharisees/Sadducees etc of today reject God's Holy Law, The Ten Commandments, while claiming to honour/follow Jesus Christ.

    Same coin.

    They mouth "Jesus", and "Lord, lord...", and think they shall enter Heaven:

    I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. - Luke 13:3

    I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. - Luke 13:5

    Two for a witness against all such, and a third:

    Can you demonstrate brother vooks, from Scripture where it states that something needs to be 'repeated' [even 'verbatim', as some, though not all, would hold to] from the texts of Genesis to Malachi in the Texts of Matthew to Revelation to be valid, binding, etc? There is no such 'rule' in all of Scripture, but is indeed a man-made pharisaical tradition to negate God's own Commandments. Yet, did you not say:

    Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. - 2 Timothy 3:8

    But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all [men], as theirs also was. - 2 Timothy 3:9

    But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. - 2 Timothy 3:13

    “...as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:”[Romans 11:26;p]​

    How did Paul teach about the Law, Ten Commandments, and Sin and Transgression just in the Book of Romans?

    Paul, in many of his Epistles [not even counting the Gospels, or the Epistles of others] lists and exemplifies the very Ten Commandments as relevant for the Christian, who are the ones which love GOD and man:

    The TEN COMMANDMENTS... just in Paul's use... and please notice that the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Commandments are not repeated from Exodus 20 verbatim anywhere in the texts of Matthew to Revelation.

    [01.]

    For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) [1 Corinthians 8:5]

    But to us [there is but] one God, the Father, of whom [are] all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom [are] all things, and we by him. [1 Corinthians 8:6]​

    But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and [from] fornication, and [from] things strangled, and [from] blood. [Acts 15:20]

    Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with [his] hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience. [Acts 13:16]

    And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath [the Gentiles asked to hear the message on Sabbath, the 7th day, for more than Jews kept the Holy Day of the LORD]. [Acts 13:42]

    And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city [“Jews and Gentiles”] together to hear the word of God. [Acts 13:44]

    And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein: [Acts 14:15]

    For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day [for there were many Strangers seeking God and kept Sabbath, but were not yet circumcised to become a full Jew, see Cornelius, etc, see Isaiah 56:6]. [Acts 15:21]

    And on the sabbath we [We, being Paul and Luke [a converted gentile physician/historian]] went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made [Prayer being made on the Holy Sabbath out in nature]; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted [thither]. [Acts 16:13]

    And Paul, as his manner was [just as Jesus, for his whole life, 33 ½ years], went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, [compare Luke 4:16] [Acts 17:2]

    And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. [Paul kept Sabbath every week for 1 ½ years [78 est. Sabbaths], see Acts 18:11 in a house connected to the Synagogue, the next best thing after removing himself from the Synagogue, see Acts 18:7, see also John 16:2, but they continued to keep the 7th Day Sabbath of the 4th Commandment in homes, out in nature, etc.] [Acts 18:4]

    For he spake in a certain place of the seventh [day] on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. [Hebrews 4:4]

    And in this [place] again, If they shall enter into my rest. [Hebrews 4:5]

    Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: [Hebrews 4:6]

    Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. [Hebrews 4:7]

    For if Jesus [Joshua] had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. [Hebrews 4:8]

    There remaineth [Apoleipo, (passive voice) to be left behind for others, remain unchanged, be reserved, in this case NOT meaning “abandoned”] therefore [ie, because of the already given argument and example of the wilderness in Hebrews 3-4, in that they (Israel; the first generation people) entered not into the promised land because of unbelief and through unbelief failed to keep the commandments of God] a rest [Sabbatismos, literally keeping Sabbath] to the people of God [ie. Christians, Spiritual Israel are to keep the 7th Day Sabbath, for as we enter into the rest given by Christ Jesus, we are then able to cease from our sins and works to obtain salvation, abide in Him, and we trust/rest in Him and obey Him when He asks us, "if ye love me keep my commandments" as is found in Exodus 20:6 and John 14:15]. [Hebrews 4:9]

    For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his. [Hebrews 4:10]

    Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. [Hebrews 4:11]​
