Gal 5:22ff speaks about self-control being a fruit of the spirit. In this thread lets chat about self-control and give examples. I was listening to a radio show as I was working out and someone was talking about for weekends she would eat peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches instead of going out to eat and that is a great example of self-control in the area of controlling spending, & eating.

Recently I have gone after my lusts and did not show self-control in the area of finances. However I have calmed my book buying which previously was a problem. Everyone will have a differnet opinion on this one. Some will say that as long as you are in debt you should not go to the movies, go out to eat and what not, and I would call that view extreme, as usually people giving this advice excuse their own house & or car debts and at the same time!

What about self-control in eating? Many these days can dish out financial advice, but are themselves obese and overweight so unless they have some medical problem, they have not controlled themselves in their eating.

As for me I need to learn self-control in some areas. Prior to creating this post I disabled my iTunes Credit Card so I no longer will be able to download movies, music, or iBooks.

    Opinions welcome

We do not go to the movies more than once a year because I feel it is money that should not be spent on frivolous things like that when there is not much to see. We do go out to dinner now because we have been careful with funds and are able to treat ourselves once in a while but when we were in debt, we never ate out. Well, I can't fully day that - we allowed ourselves a $7 pizza once a month. Now we have no debt and there are times that money is tight and we don't eat out and definitely don't charge anything. I have money set aside in an emergency fund as well as an envelope of cash for necessities when money is tight.

How do you practice self control? You make the decision, make a plan and pray.

    Good post.

The only bit that I would add is that...

    ...You just do it.

Okay, I have to be completely honest here...one pizza a month?

Why do you punish yourself so...?

    ;)

    God bless.

That was all we could afford. Realize that we live on Long Island - the land of the best pizza in the world!!! Pizza is as much of a life need here as water and air. LOL

I agree there is a self determination involved and I believe expected of us by the Lord, but we also understand that self control is a fruit of the Spirit. Which I don't think we can equate to self discipline completely.

Having self control and practicing it may be two different issues to discuss.

    God bless.

There is a reason many restaurants advertise "...New York Pizza!"

Quite possibly one of life's most perfect foods.

We sometimes make homemade pizza, which is not that difficult. Once while making some, I mistook some frozen rice for frozen mozzarella, and...well, it was an interesting pizza. Rice was a bit crunchy, but the crust was good.

Ahem, er, excuse, me, didn't mean to derail the topic...

Sorry. Now I have revealed at least one area where self control is simply not an issue.

    God bless.
