In the wake of the Bruce Jenner story—the most celebrated gender reassignment in the short history of the procedure—female Anglican clergy members have begun quietly campaigning for a similar sex change of the divinity into a female.

It was only in January of this year that the Church of England ordained its first female bishop, the Right Rev. Libby Lane, following last November’s change in legislation that allowed the practice. Since then, the church has selected two other women for episcopal consecration.

Women and the Church (WATCH), the activist group that successfully crusaded for the ordination of female bishops, have now set their sights on a new goal: identifying God as a woman. Referring to God as a “He” results in “a deficient understanding of who God is,” according to Rev. Jody Stowell, a member of the group.

WATCH has called for a full overhaul of the church’s official liturgy to better highlight the equal status of women, since the current references to God consist almost exclusively of male language and imagery.

This stuff was well established long before Bruce. PCUSA and the UMC were all part of a Re-Imagining conference in 1993. Wikipedia actually has a pretty decent article about the conference.

Here's just a bit of the article:

We were members of the PCUSA and my husband an elder back in the 90s when that was going on. It was when our church first discussed leaving the PCUSA.

I was a wet-behind-the-ears pastor in the UMC then. It was a great teaching time for the church, however. For many of the lifelong Methodist it was the first time they ever sat down and compared the claims to the Word. As much as I hated the denomination's association with the conference the folks in the church grew spiritually by leaps and bounds.

God has no gender. Unfortunately we, in English, have no word to denote that in a translation.

God come in the flesh was circumcised on the 8th day.

We were baptized in the name of the Father (not the mother), the Son (not the daughter) and the Holy Ghost.

OK a case might be made for the Holy Spirit because ruach is feminine in the OT and neuter (pneuma) in the NT.

We are begotten of the father , born of the Holy Spirit, however
Jesus called the Holy Spirit "He", so whatever feminine attributes the Spirit has they are functional and not of His (the Holy Spirit) essential being.

Yeah I know, I'm sexist - so take away my birthday.
