We do not live in Britain we live in America and when we see our societal morals declining into the abyss we should and have the right to speak out publicly. The idea that we as Christians should just sit down, shut up, and keep to ourselves is absurd.

I must have missed where you emphasized to "sit down and shut up". Lewis recognized that we are required to live in a pluralistic social structure, which more often than not is hostel and rebellious to the principles we acknowledge as christian believers. Scripture also demonstrates that throughout history, the followers of God were often forced to live under hostile civic rulers.

My "hope" is that states like mine....will decide to simply get out of the "marriage business". The intention being to simply take the issue off the table. Legal contracts to replace nuptial contracts. Then the concept of marriage would be independently settled by each church.

Being a Lewis fanatic, I knew I smelled a rat as soon as this was quoted, (presumably about "gay marriage".)

Knowing Lewis would never say something so stupid in reference to homosexuality, I looked up the context.
It is from "Mere Christianity", and he is speaking specifically to the issue of how far to permit or limit Divorce laws:

Before leaving the question of divorce, I should like to distinguish two things which are very often confused. The Christian conception of marriage is one: the other is the quite different question-how far Christians, if they are voters or Members of Parliament, ought to try to force their views of marriage on the rest of the community by embodying them in the divorce laws. A great many people seem to think that if you are a Christian yourself you should try to make divorce difficult for every one. I do not think that. At least I know I should be very angry if the Mahommedans tried to prevent the rest of us from drinking wine. My own view is that the Churches should frankly recognise that the majority of the British people are not Christians and, therefore, cannot be expected to live Christian lives. There ought to be two distinct kinds of marriage: one governed by the State with rules enforced on all citizens, the other governed by the Church with rules enforced by her on her own members. The distinction ought to be quite sharp, so that a man knows which couples are married in a Christian sense and which are not.

Lewis would not for a second think to extend this as a Universal Principle regarding such a non-thing as a "gay marriage".

I never stated it was in regard to homosexual marriage.

The principle is about Christians expecting non christians to live in the same manner. The principle that Lewis is setting forth is a wise one for today in many areas.

Obviously not all the time....but you are so appreciated for highlighting others defeciencies.

I click quote, then proceed....sometimes it comes out fine, others not so much. Is it that bothersome to you?

Through out the scriptures we know that (e.g.) "perilous times will come".

    Read 2 Timothy Chapter 3.

OK maybe the time does come where its so bad that we must must sit down and shut up.

But not shut up towards God.

Our great high priest has broken down the wall of partition and ripped open the veil and given us direct access into the Holy of Holies.

    Hebrews 4
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

He knows what we need/want before we even ask. But He still wants us to ask.
