Is the United States of America too big to govern?

The United States is not to big our Federal government is to big.

 

I agree! The size of the Federal Government is the problem. If the country were run as envisioned by the Constitution, paying heed to the 10th Amendment, much of the work of the Feds would disappear and the entire country run more efficiently.

That being said if the Federal Government continues to grow the country is lost!

 

It's not too big to govern if it's governed by the Constitution.

Therein lies the problem.

 

If it were governed by the Constitution most of the Federal programs would revert to the states.

I don't think its too big. Maybe it is more appropriate to say the Federal government is becoming to unwieldy to manage.

If we were to decentralize decision making, returning more of the powers of governance to the states and distribute it away from the Federal government the United States becomes much smaller. If you're trying to govern this wide swath of land from a repossessed swampland off the Potomac, you're just not going to be able to do it very well.

The brilliance of the Founders' vision held within the Constitution is a scalable government, with power in the hands of the governed and distributed across the many states. It works best this way.

The terror of our age is the unmitigated expansion of the Federal government. It makes things far more difficult to manage.

 

Evil and corruption are not restrained by size or manageability.

 

Yes, your boss was technically correct. So are the other posters. If the US had remained a republic, with the 10th amendment upheld, it would be a much different situation. As it now stands, our centralized government, continually grabbing more contol has long since created a bueacracy so large and unwieldy that no one really seams to know what the other is doing. Add to that the simple fact that democracies will not last. The system will degrade until it becomes a totalitarian state. Thankfully we belong to another kingdom.

 

Occasionally, we hear politicians telling us that they will make the government more efficient, more responsive – even smaller.

Sorry folks, none of that is in the cards. The reason is simple, and has been known to the civilized world since Aristotle: it’s called “habits.”

We all have them, and those of the federal bureaucracy are unique.

And they’re all bad.

Once upon a time, federal government “workers” might well have fancied themselves to be well-intentioned public servants.

Well, those days are over.
