I say these two verses say two completely different things:

    Ephesians 6:14New International Version (NIV)

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

Ephesians 6:1421st Century King James Version (KJ21)
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness,

    What say you?

Means the same thing to me.

"Gird Loins" means to wear a belt. Now that belt is likely to be placed around the waist, but it doesn't have to be.

Gird loins does not mean to wear a belt in the sense applying it just around the waist. Girding meant to pull up the tunic or robe with the sash between the legs and tie it off to allow freedom of movement when one was going to do manual labor or put on armor.

IntheLight, you are correct. And in all likely hood Paul was referring to Isaiah 11:5 "And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins."

Today we might say, "man up." :D

    I'd say you are funny.

HCSB : with truth like a belt around your waist
NET : fastening the belt of truth around your waist
GWT : Fasten truth around your waist like a belt
WEB : the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist
[although I get images of Batman with this one]
CEB : the belt of truth around your waist
ISV : having fastened the belt of truth around your waist
NRSV : fasten the belt of truth around your waist

When I find things that I believe to be contradictions and I really feel I need to dig into it, I go to someone who is well versed in the original texts.

Hard to discuss the merits of the two translations without indicating what they mean. Either translation could be saying do something that results in you being unencumbered for action. Truth is something that is faithful or has fidelity to the original. Thus if God is reality, then Truth would provide the perfect image of God. But if our testimony is tainted, if we are willing to slander or gossip or disparage to "win" a dispute, we have failed to gird up our loins or wrap ourselves in truth like a belt.

NIV : with the belt of truth buckled round your waist

That settles the formerly "vexing" question of the OP. ;-)
