Hispanic activists vow to flood voter rolls with 1 million immigrants, punish Trump, GOP at polls

Immigrant rights activists have vowed to sign up 1 million immigrants — mostly Mexicans — for citizenship and then quickly register them to vote in time to punish Donald Trump and his fellow Republicans at the polls in November for their harsh rhetoric.

The advocates say the new voters could make a difference in the presidential race, where most of the Republican field has tacked to the right in word and policy, and in key Senate races in Illinois and Florida, where Republicans will be reaching to hang on to critical seats.

With nearly 9 million legal immigrants already eligible to become citizens, the 1 million goal is not far-fetched. The activists say they are counting on energizing another 2 million Hispanic citizens who have turned 18 since 2012 and who they believe will turn out to vote to defend fellow Dreamers, or young illegal immigrants, against Republican calls for their deportation.

“This is a huge amount of latent power,” said Joshua Hoyt, executive director of the National Partnership for New Americans, the group he and other leaders announced Thursday at the National Press Club.

The effort is funded in part by the Open Society Foundation, the project of liberal billionaire George Soros.

Hispanic leaders insist they are ready to flex political muscles commensurate with their size as the second-largest racial or ethnic group in the country behind whites.

Article mentions Hispanic leaders and Hispanic activists yet only names one, and he doesn't mention any specific numbers and doesn't mention Trump.

I don't think the article needed to mention numbers or names because it's pretty evident that the GOP and its candidates are the target.

Whoever they may be, they seem to have figured out who seems to be coming out against them and their interests and have a plan to do something about it.

Article assumes Trump will be the Republican candidate come November.
    We don't know that.

Article says there are 9 million Hispanics "eligible to become citizens".
    Really? Since when?

Article says (some unnamed group) has a goal of "signing up" 1 million immigrants for citizenship.
I had no idea it was that easy. Just sign up and you're in.

Sorry, but this article is a mess. It makes assumptions without providing facts. It's a good guess that most voting eligible Hispanics would vote against Republicans but writing a story with specific numbers and specific goals and then not providing the people or the organization behind such a massive effort is irresponsible journalism.

No we don't. But the tone of the article tends to lead me to believe that the statement was meant to infer that it will be in reference to whomever the GOP candidate is as Hispanics and the rest of the world have seen what a lot of folks in the GOP really think.

    No. The article says
and then goes on to say
Explained in the previous quote. At least 8.8 million are eligible to become legal with 1/3 of them being Hispanic. The National Partnership for New Americans funded by George Soros's group wants to make sure they are signed up first to get their citizenship and then to vote.
