I see where people, groups of people, and small organizations have started “go fund me” accounts to benefit others. New wheelchair for young boy in need, support for four orphaned children, and an attempt to save the home of a WWII veteran (assuming these are legitimate).

But I also see people starting their own “go fund me” accounts asking for themselves, seeking money to help pay for their TV, wedding, fertility treatments, college tuition, vacations, class trips, automobile repairs…….the list goes on.

What do you think about “go fund me” accounts that are started by people for their own monetary benefit? Is this appropriate or simply panhandling?

I think it probably started off as something good, and really was meant to help those in need. Now if you stub your toe, set up the account and see how much you can get.

One of the reasons that people set up their own go fund me account is that only the person who sets up the account can withdraw the money. There are have been people that have not gotten any of the money given to them because a "friend" set it up for them and then took the money and ran. Full disclosure my husband and I have set up an account for our fertility treatment. I don't post incessantly on facebook about it like some and I have been amazed at how God's people have blessed us through that account.
People may give if they want to. I would say that it would cross over into panhandling if every post on FB or whatnot was the go fund me page, or they spam their contact list over and over. Setting it up letting people know and then letting people decide what to give is not panhandling in my opinion.

I can also understand you and your husbands reasons (I had forgotten or I would't have included it as an example, but reading your post I think you mentioned this before). Anyway, a relative had started an account and invited many of us to contribute by messaging us on FB as he wanted to raise enough money for car repairs. A friend repaired his car for him, but my wife and I were discussing the appropriateness of his use of the program.

I suppose some of my apprehension about this method is personal or perhaps even generational (I find it hard to ask for help unless as a last resort). I see some accounts that seem reasonable to me (like yours). But looking around on the site, there are people asking for money to fund their college education, to go on vacation, or a school trip.....I'm just not so sure that this is appropriate.

Oh, and thanks for the explanation of how the system works. I did not know how the money was controlled. I'd be very weary of donating to someone I did not know regardless of the cause. I hope your efforts are going well.

In my experience to many times people prey on Christians and I will relate to an incident that happened at my church being an eyewitness. We finished with our morning worship service and the brethren were in the front of church fellowshipping while the sisters were in the kitchen preparing lunch. This woman walking down the street came up to my Dad where we were all assembled and said I would like to talk to your minister if he is around. The minister stepped forward and said I am the minister Brother Wall my I help you?... She said sir could you give me some money as me and my babies are hungry and I need to go to the store and buy them some food... Brother Wall said I won't do that but I will do this... We are about to have lunch and there is no one here that I know of will object to you joining us. Bring your children and your family down and you can be first in line and there is plenty of food for everyone... She said I can't do that I need money and walked away... As she was leaving Brother Walls comment was I guess she wasn't very hungry... Just a side note there was a grocery/liquor store nearby... My wife and I give where we see there is a need usually through the church never online... Brother Glen

I did not take offence. I know people have different conviction where infertility is concerned, and I can understand why people might see it as self serving to ask for money for it. I agree it is a generational thing. I met my husband online so why not see if others would be willing to help through online means. I hate asking for money as well. It was the worst part of mission trips I have been on. I agree there are a lot of stupid request on their. It was a Facebook friend asking for help for a wedding that spurred my husband an I on to try it out. We figured if people would give toward a wedding were cost can be controlled a lot more then infertility treatments why not see why can happen. Like I said we have been blessed by God's people helping out, some we have never met just wanted to help us out and I think that is amazing.

There was a article about a woman setting up a fund because they had blown all their money on PowerBall tickets, and people actually sent money until it was shut down.

I've almost completed my taxes and looks like I'll be paying a small car ...I may have to start a "go fund me" for that.

There are legitimate reasons and I have even donated to a few but then there are the ones that should not be there at all. I have no problem helping out people that I know need the money. I would much rather give them the money to sent it to a "go fund me" account. There are people who just make up stories to get money. The sad part is that you can't trust everybody, not everybody is honest.
