Sanders Applied For Conscientious Objector Status To Avoid Vietnam War

Bernie Sanders was a pacifist during the Vietnam War and applied for conscientious objector status at the time, his campaign told ABC News.

“As a college student in the 1960s he was a pacifist,” campaign spokesman Michael Briggs said in an email. “[He] isn’t now.”

If I had it to do over again, I would avoid the Vietnam War.

I would do it again, especially with the same men. Didn't play the coward the first time and see no reason to act differently if I had do overs.

I did not turn tail, but would never make that mistake again. Have you ever read the Constitution? War is declared by Congress and executed by the President. Vietnam was an illegal war. I see you quote Trump. He says going into Iraq was a mistake, exactly the opposite what you say about Vietnam. So which is it?

Congress DID authorized spending - thus giving approval.
As you said War can only be declared an act of Congress, but does the COTUS REQUIRE a declaration of War, in order to send troops?

The Constitution is a document that retains its original meaning. That does not mean LBJ can change it with his Bell Helicopter stock and transform the meaning of war. If he wants to do that then amend the Constitution. The fact is like Iraq we had no business there.

Congress has not declared war since 1942. For our military to take no action in Tonkin gulf or Persian gulf, in the canal zone, the neutral zone, or the twilight zone, i'm glad they don't wait on it.

I know all about the cowards that ran from service during Vietnam. DC is full of them. Quoting Trump on one issue doesn't mean I'm a fan or that I agree with him anywhere else. You dodge service in any war, You're a coward. Period. Illigality is just another coward's excuse.

The War Powers Resolution as adopted in the form of a United States Congress joint resolution. It provides that the U.S. President can send U.S. Armed Forces into action abroad only by declaration of war by Congress, "statutory authorization," or in case of "a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces."

The Gulf of Tonkin incident involving the USS Ma ddox was declared to be "an attack upon the armed forces of the United States" thus invoking the War Powers Resolution.

The War Powers Resolution requires the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 days, with a further 30 day withdrawal period, without a Congressional authorization for use of military force or a declaration of war by the United States. The resolution was passed by two-thirds of Congress, overriding a presidential veto.

It has been alleged that the War Powers Resolution has been violated in the past – for example, by President Bill Clinton in 1999, during the bombing campaign in Kosovo. Congress has disapproved all such incidents, but none has resulted in any successful legal actions being taken against the president for alleged violations.

And Obama in Libya. Obama is currently in violation of National Defense Authorization Act, legislation he signed into law.

It seems to me you are the coward because you do not have the guts to take up for the Constitution. If you will recall your oath, you swore to defend the Constitution. When the President takes an oath like LBJ, he swore to protect and defend the Constitution. The Constitution says that Congress declares war. The Constitution says the President executes war. Whoop tee doo you were in Vietnam. Who wasn't? Before you call someone a coward, you better get your facts straight. That's it vote for Trump, or is it Tramp, the man that will rescue America. Maybe you could be his VP.

The War Powers Act is unconstitutional. If the people, Congress, and the President feel we can execute war IAW the so called War Powers Act, then they need to amend the Constitution with 3/5 ths of the state legislatures or call a Constitutional Convention.

I don't see the legislature intervening at all, after seeing how votes for or against the war in Iraq have become campaign ad ammo. The House and Senate members would probably prefer letting the president do it all, as they won't have to worry about a vote coming back to bite them.

Protecting your home land from real threats is fantastic. Fighting in wars so rich men can get richer is not wise. Not sure you get a pass for murdering your fellow man just because you are obeying orders. Can't think of one war In past 250 years Americans should have fought in.
