    I hate to shop. Always have.

    Was looking a few months ago but decided to hold for a bit because, like I said, I hate to shop.

    Now Mrs. Rolf tells me that it is time.

    It is like tearing a Band-Aid off of a hairy arm...

    What are you looking for? Have you narrowed it down?

    My minivan was totaled a few years ago and so the search was on for a new car. I decided that we could probably finally get out of the minivan and get an SUV but each one we looked at wasn't what we wanted. If we had good passenger space for 6 people, there was not enough cargo room and if there was cargo room, we didn't have room for 6. So at the end of our search, we went back to Dodge and got the same van I've had since 1996 - a Dodge Grand Caravan. I actually love the van a lot so it's not disappointing that I went back to a minivan and I just couldn't fathom buying something for $10,000 more to get less space and features. :)

    If you are purchasing a new vehicle - make sure you insist that the dealer provide you with a 3rd key. - Remember - these new keys cost 2-300 dollars.
    And tell them - its a deal breaker - if they refuse.

    There are workarounds for this, depending on the vehicle brand.

    What type of transportation are you looking for? What are your family needs?

    I have been buying cars since 1961.

    One of the best cars I ever bought was a 1997 Lincoln Towncar. I usually only keep a car 3-5 years, but I kept that Towncar for 10 years and had to wrestle my wife two falls out of three to get it away from her. It went 278 thousand miles with never even a tiny problem.

    One of the worst, most disappointing, cars I ever owned was my Mercedes Benz AMG 32 SLK. One thing after another, and it was terribly uncomfortable to boot. I will say that Mercedes stood behind it and fixed everything at their expense, including giving me a loaner for long periods of time while they waited for parts to arrive from Germany, but for what I paid for that car I did not get my monies worth. Not even close.

    I presently have a 2007 Mercury Marquise (same as the Lincoln but it doesn't say "Lincoln" on it). It too has been a great car and will be trading it off sometime this summer. Which brings me to the OP.

    I have looked at just about every type/make/model of car on the market. I looked at the Cadillac CT6 and XTS and didn't like either one.

    Oddly enough I test drove a new Chevrolet Impala and found it equal to or better than the similar Cadillacs, for a whole lot less money!

    My wife wants a minivan. I want a monster truck, probably a Ford F-250 Super Duty XLT.

    We will probably compromise and keep my Chevy C-20 Pick up and buy the Impala. :)

    On orders from my doctor I just sold my 27th motorcycle. He says I am too old for that nonsense. :)

    Autos are no longer something on which I could make myself spend much money. Depreciation, ease of damage. I prefer to buy, rather than lease and to buy new, rather than used. Though I have had some nice cars, my tastes have changed. Basic and comfortable is better. I do like speed, though. *laugh*

    Though I would prefer an inexpensive-ish sports sedan, the quality of the roads in some areas where I live causes me to think a second time about purchasing something that I am afraid of scratching or damaging a rim. Then there is the snow...

    I am probably leaning along the line of the Civic, Mazda3, Focus, and a few others.

    I entertained the idea of a Mini Cooper for a brief time, but was told that it was a Chick Car (thanks ITL, you were right).

    Ah yes, I remember now.

    So, you're looking at a compact car. My wife has an Altima and it's been a great car. We got the SV version with the four cylinder. The six cylinder is crazy quick, but we wanted the higher mpg offered by the four. (You said you like to go fast though.) She's got the funky CVT tranny, took a while to get used to it. The Altima is a bit bigger than the models you listed.

    Another one we liked, extremely good acceleration was the Chrysler 200 with a V6. Nine speed transmission can't even tell it's shifting. They've redesigned it recently and it looks real nice.

    Any interest in all wheel drive?

    Mrs. Rolf has AWD on her SUV and likes it so far. Because of the area in which I live and the necessary ability to be out before the county plows the roads in winter, I have had an SUV with 4wd for the last several years. Because I can now wait until the roads are cleared, front-wheel drive is good enough.

    Drove a 2016 Civic EX non-turbo version yesterday. Frankly, if they replaced the Honda badge with an Acura symbol, I could think it was an entry-level version of it. I know that some people do not like those CVTs, but I did not mind the different feeling at all.

    Re the Mini. There are very few around here, but nearly 90% that I have seen on the road were driven by women. Thanks so very much for saving my dignity. *laugh*

    Honda has good quality control.

    Takes a while to get used to a CVT, maybe a week or so. Then you don't notice it. Unless you are going downhill and coasting. Then the transmission sort of freewheels, that is the rpms increase. First couple of times this happens it kind of freaks you out. My concern with a CVT would be longevity. I don't think there is a lot of data on durability.

    My thought also. Seems like many manufacturers are going that direction. We usually keep vehicles for five or so years before replacing. If we purchase the Civic, the 5yr/60k power train warranty should cover it I think.

    In that same vein, you may want to consider a Hyundai Elantra. It compares very favorably to the three cars you mentioned above. Plus, it has the 10 year warranty. My son has one and is very pleased with it.
    Also, you may want to look at getting a "true car" price before going into the dealership.
