Some candidates have called for doing away with the IRS.
Sure, that sounds good - BUT if we close the IRS - then who will be responsible for collecting taxes.

The IRS will only be done away with if its Name is changed.

Who was responsible prior to 1913? (And, yes, I know Internal Revenue was started by Lincoln in 1862 to fund the Civil War, but we are talking about the IRS which collects individual income taxes.) :)

If the IRS only collects taxes from Individuals - then who collects the other taxes collected by the govt?

It doesn't only collect individual income taxes. It now collects almost all federal taxs, but prior to 1862 taxes were collected by the United States Department of the Treasury.

and that is my whole point - we cannot do away with the IRS - as there are many taxes collected. But what NEEDS to be done is to take away some of their enforcement procedures.

Why not? Why do we need a bloated bureaucracy too big to be governed and too entrenched to respond to the will of the people when the Department of the Treasury is capable of doing the same job a whole lot more efficiently?

I can't see that the tax code will be reformed because of two major deductions: mortgage payments and contributions to charity. Perhaps the code can be simplified. Under Obama, the IRS was used for political purposes, but even at that there is no evidence that the American people want honest government at this time.

Why not just call it as it is?

I Resent Success has a nice ring to it.

My point was that it would be a change in its name only.

The IRS isn't the problem, it's the Congress who writes the tax laws. It should be simple and everyone pays the same % with no deductions.

Actually congress does not write the tax law. Congress levies the tax. The rest is IRS regulatory law codified in the Code of Federal Regulation not to be confused with laws that congress actually wrote contained the United States Code.

Almost all IRS code is CFR.

Not sure I follow. What's the difference between a law and a Levi? Isn't congress the one who says how much I have to pay?
