What was your favorite duty station?

My first was Walter Reed. Moving to and living in DC was an adventure. But my favorite was Germany.

    MCAS Eltoro

Cruising down PCH on a bike with shorts and shades was a great time.

My favorite was going to a new Army Post - and see who you knew from a previous duty station, new challenges, ect - I loved every post I was at.

I always liked moving and going to new areas. Unfortunately, I only hit two (D.C. and Germany) during my 23 years that were outside of my home state. Half my career was spent in a recruiting command close to where I grew up. But it worked out for the best.

I was selected by DA to be a recruiter ( assignment was to be the DC district) but my DISCOM Cdr (O-6) said I would not make a good recruiter - well, I did one more hitch - then ETS - got out and became a successful radio station salesman. (isn't that what a recruiter is - a salesman?)

I was advised the same. I chose recruiting because I was in Germany and planning to ETS. I thought at least this way I’d get another tour in and be able to choose a location. I’m not a “type A” personality, and I thought the experience would be good for me as well.

That said I realized why, when I worked at Walter Reed, we got so many E-8’s and E-9’s from recruiting as psych patients O O. Army recruiting was not my favorite duty, but I did well (I earned the gold badge quickly). Did one tour and got out and went into the National Guard (M-Day).

I stayed M-Day for about a year and took a recruiting position with the TNARNG, and I loved it (mostly because we were left alone). I earned my master badge quickly and did a tour as the Senior Counselor at MEPS. After that I took a position at HQ. The year I decided to retire I requested to go back to field recruiting (I wanted to get back to the house and get my "ducks in a row" for retirement), so it all worked out well.

I was waiting for a ship at Treasure Island in San Fran bay and was assigned to a big hanger run by a Chief. We showed up at 8, talked/drank coffee till around ten when he would make assignments for the day, work till noon when the hanger closed and we left for the day.

The best duty station is the last one you had, and the worst is the one you're at now. That maxim held true with almost everyone I talked to in the service.

My favorite was Schofield barracks, Hawaii.

Kool.....I get to be your exception Biggrin. My best one was my second one (out of 5).

I almost requested Hawaii (as a combat engineer). Can't remember why I changed my mind. :(

As far as my Eltoro duty station goes I also enjoyed it as I was on security details for:

    Bush
    Dukakis
    Commandant of the Marine Corps
    The Blue Angels

Enjoyed being a weapons instructor for Marines shipping out to Vietnam. The class I gave to officers and staff ,up to and including general officers , was a little scary.

To late they are already here!... My favorite duty station by far was M.C.R.D San Diego with Military Police... Why?... Well I was born on the outskirts of San Diego and that had been where I went to school and I knew the city... And my home was 15 miles from the base and San Diego is a military town!... Who wouldn't like a duty station like that?... Brother Glen

West Coast or East Coast?... If you were on the West Coast you were probably a Camp Pendleton... East Coast I would say Camp Lejeune... Brother Glen

Why would I forget it? Is there some reason I'm not suppose to remember where I was stationed and what I was doing?

I'm willing to talk about it. What else would you like to know?

Looks like the Iraqis recycled the buildings since we left.
