Granted I have many verses memorized in the KJV but there are times I prefer the ESV,NIV, or NKJV. Today the scripture memorization passage was 1 Cor 6:19-20 and I chose the ESV and recited it in class. I know the pastor wants everyone to memorize only from the KJV but since I am putting the word of God into my heart I chose the ESV. So what translation do you memorize from?

I'm starting my own HCSB-Only crew at my house. Biggrin

I switched to it a few years ago. And the wife liked using mine so much she bought herself one recently. Then yesterday, we swung by Lifeway and they had some nice kids Bibles on sale, and we picked one up for the girl (5) and the boy (7). I was doing my rounds taking attendance today and saw my son reading out of Job in his class, it was a proud papa moment.

I see. What if you were in a KJVO church and they wanted everyone to memorize 100% of the time from the KJV? Would you conform or would you memorize from the HCSB sometimes? I have memorized from the KJV plenty of times, but when I get my choice I will go with the ESV/NIV 84.

I'll have to leave that bridge uncrossed, as of yet. Our Sunday school lesson workbooks come in NIV, our pulpit Bibles are NASB, and the pastor uses the KJV.

I even have a 3rd Edition Oxford Annotated for when I need to check something in the Apocrypha.

I don't always memorize passages, but when I do I use koine Greek. Stay holy my friends. Laugh

Just kidding. I do not memorize passages as much anymore as I try to memorize God's Word (what those passages communicate). So if we were referring to the holiness of the believer I might point to 1 Peter and offer what the passage states. I do this for a couple of reasons. First, I don't want to rely on a faulty memory. But second, I believe it more important to understand a passage than to recite one from rote memory. When I do decide to memorize a passage, I may choose the NKJV if it is a psalm because I believe it does the literary style more justice. But I'm generally not stuck on one translation or another.

I have many verses memorized from the NIV of my youth that have stuck with me and a few that stay in the KJV. Right now, when I work on memorization, its usually form the HCSB since that is the primary text I use for preaching and teaching.

Bible memorization is a great topic of discussion that is sorely been lost. Admittedly, I don't do it enough but I do think it is of great importance, especially for kids.

I know this wasn't asked of me, but I did want to toss in a few things.

    1. I would never be part of a KJVO church or a KJVP church. My doctrine doesn't allow for it.

    2. This kind of leadership is, imho, not the biblical model, but if a pastor (which would be weird since I are one) came and said "you must use this translation" for this kind of practice, I'd pack up and head out.

I'm sure these are faithful Christians who are pursuing Christ authentically...but this is a kind of church I'd never be part of and would caution others against as well.

I have passages memorized in the NIV (my 'Christian' School days) the KJV (from before and after my School days, and the ESV. I think at this point going forward my husband and I will stick with the ESV, as I know I have when reciting a verse I have learned in multiple translations I will sometimes switch back and forth which can make things weird.
My husband and I are currently slowly working our way through Eph. using the ESV.

In my situation I cannot just leave. So what do I do? I memorize from the Bible that I prefer and although he may not like it when I recite from the ESV or NIV it's my heart the verses are going into.

So you are being deliberately disobedient to the pastor and teacher of the class?
