The gift of evangelism

    I was talking with my 5-Pt Calvinist friend who told me of someone he knew a while back who had this gift. He claimed that this man could walk into a restaurant, walk into an elevator, or what not and be able to see who the elect were and then he would approach them in grace and they would want to be discipled so they could submit to the Lordship of Christ, as Lordship Salvation is taught amongst Calvinist evangelists.

    There are dozens and dozens of non-Calvinist Baptists among others that think they have the gift of evangelism. They can persuade people to say a prayer, but rarely will their converts want to be discipled and or to submit to the Lordship of Christ. Once in a while will the non-calvinist evangelist meet one of the elect, but this is rare, as evidence by the many who come to faith but refuse to be discipled.

    Has any of you met someone like this? I have not. I lack this gift, Ray Comfort lacks it, and perhaps Paul Washer does as well.

    Addition: I have met many non Cal elect in Greenville SC.

    My friend claimed he had this gift and he had evidence to back it up with discipleship.

    I have known a couple of people who really have the gift of evangelism. Neither one would claim to see who is elect, in fact one of them was not even reformed. But he had lead and discipled many many people to the Lord. He was the evangelism teacher at my Bible college. The other was a girl from my old church in Colorado. She had been used by God to lead and discipled 4 different people by the time I left the church when I got married. And the really cool thing about her was she was a fairly recent convert herself, having only been saved for about 5 years at that time. It was clearly a gift for her. For her especially it was just a boldness she had to tell people the truth. It didn't matter who they were she told them the truth and then would ask if they (females only, she would direct males to a man to disciple) wanted to have a Bible Study with her. No tracts, no gimmicks, just telling people the gospel and then discipling them as the Lord commands.

    There is no "gift of evangelism" while some are more inclined and perhaps equipped to evangelize, there is never, in the NT, mentioned a specific gift of evangelism.

    And don't try to quote Ephesians 4, that's talking about offices not gifts.

    I agree. And the office mentioned in Ephesians 4 today we would call a missionary.

    I have always been taught this. Perhaps my friend was mistaken and I fell for it.

    I'm of the opinion that the apostles listed are the missionaries. Evangelists are an itinerant group usually locally based. Of course, these days, you could blend the two. Too many churches have neglected the office of evangelist.
